Hello A couple years ago I bought a bunch of small yale combination padlocks for suitcases and bags for a long overseas trip. I've not used them since, and have forgotten the password. Could anyone point me in the direction to where I can find information about how to pick the locks so that I can use them again. Don't want to chuck them all. You might want to check out Potti314 on YouTube. He seems to almost specialize in this type of lock. Not sure if he's done the exact locks you have but if not I'm sure you'll still get some great ideas on how to tackle them. https://www.youtube.com/@Potti314/videos

Well, "not allowed" may be a bit strong. They're not going to arrest you or anything. It just means that if you do, and TSA does need to get in your bag, they're going to destroy something to do so.

Yes, and after your padlock is cut off somebody might steal your stuff

Anyone that's interested may help themselves to as many of my dirty socks as they'd like. Anything valuable goes in the backpack which gets carried with me on the plane.  I've had luggage lost before, the checked bag is really just for clothes and the tube of toothpaste that won't pass security. The TSA approved locks are such a joke anyway that they won't stop anyone serious, even if the keys weren't readily available... If you have something really valuable that you absolutely must put in a checked bag, also pack a pistol and follow Deviant Ollam's advice on traveling with firearms. Plus, you might get to enjoy some range time at wherever you're going.

While away an idle hour, eg whilst watching television. Start at 000, apply a little tension to the shackle, and cycle through the 1000 permutations. On average, it is necessary to try about half the total. If you are in luck, they might all be the same combination.

Same thing my locksmith Dad used to do while watching TV

Would try 000 first, if Not, apply Pulling tenstion, Rotate Tightest Wheel First. May have to Go back and forth as Tighes Wheel may Change. Maybe a Knife?

You have the best advice for finding a combo.
I reread the TSA warning and came to the conclusion that the advice refers to locks that might hang down far enough to get caught between the conveyor belts. But, what is funny is that there is a TSA code on the bottom of that lock. This should imply that TSA can open it all day long unless they have lost their magic keys. Then they will get out the bolt cutter. Just a thought.
