Kaba X09 recovery

Postby Sattech200 » 9 May 2024 18:01

Good afternoon everyone.

I have a Kaba X09 safe lock that I setup in super/sub mode but have apparently forgotten the combination. I have access to the back of it and what I believe to be the serial number both from the back cover of the bolt and the original shipping box when I installed this new(Both are the same sn), but it's much longer then six digits or is the sn on the inside back cover different? Do I enter the serial number twice when in d
Sup/sub recovery mode? I tried a few different ways but haven't been successful yet. I do have the lightning bolt showing along with the change key per the instructions I've found so far.

Are these the instructions you have been following?

https://classlocks.com.au/downloads/Safe%20Instructions/X09.pdf

The serial number will be 6 digits and is on a sticker on the back cover, as well as inside the cover on the pc board.
The big long number on the sticker on the side of the lock case is not the one you are looking for, I don't know why KABA Mas has two "Serial Numbers",

see example photos in this Kaba X09 for sale on ebay

As you can see both are 743055

I wonder if the 743055 can be derived from the long number on the side sticker...

Yes, those are the instructions I've been following which didn't give the procude for recovery in the sup/sub mode. I have to input 12 digits(6 for sup, 6 for sub) so does that mean I should repeat the serial twice? I have the light ing bolt and change key symbols both illuminated as instructed.

And yes, that long serial is the one I have. Unfortunately the lobc pin is in place. Can I just use the Dremel and grind the cap of the pin or is it more involved then that? Sorry if this is treading into the restricted area.

It would be awesome if the inside SN could be derived from the long one but I suspect that could be a big security risk since it's also printed on the outside of the shipping box.

As you mentioned, talking about drilling locks gets into destructive entry techniques which we only discuss in the advanced topics areas, but I did hear that Home Depot is having a sale on 5/32" cobalt drill bits this weekend.

I had an old Kaba Mas X09 and found the company's help line to be very responsive, probably because they accustomed to dealing with govt clients, who paid $$$ for the product. However... asking them for help in this area may be a step too far.

Many find that after approx. 20 yrs the X09 becomes unreliable. I changed mine to a mechanical S&G lock and haven't looked back. The old mechanical locks are more enjoyable.

I have recently heard some comments regarding the failures/reliability on the x09. What are some good s&g models o look at? I should note that I am dealing with a situation at the moment so high high security is a must.

I sincerely appreciate all the info and input.

I'm on the road right now, so I can't give you a detailed answer. I think I used a 6630 or 6730 S&G lock. It bolted right in, with the same mounts as the X09, making it easy. The Kaba Mas help line was good, telling me that the transition to an S&G mechanical lock would be no problem, that it would fit with no modifications.

I'm sure a more experienced person will give you a better answer in a bit.

I appreciate it!

I've converted...or I should say swapped out a half dozen or so back and forth so I'm familiar with that part of it. I've just been pretty impressed with the security features behind the Kaba x-line...at least that's based on what limited knowledge I have of them. This is definitely an area I'm excited to learn more about...maybe turn it into a sideline gig or better.

For Federal Specification FF-L-2740B, other than its successor, the Kaba Mas X-10, your only other option is the Sargent and Greenleaf 2740B.

I like S&G 8500 series locks. And S&G 2937.

Group 1. Not as prone to fail locked as the KABA MAS SCIF locks in my experience.
