SFIC Core Doesn't Fit New Lock

Postby apts4rent » 10 Dec 2023 23:14

I bought a Yale SFIC knob online and tried putting my core into it. Here's a link to the exact lock I bought. https://www.trudoor.com/yale/b-ca-4607- ... knob-lock/

The SFIC fits into the knob and goes flush with the housing but I can't return the control key to vertical. From what I can tell it LOOKS like it's a perfect fit except it won't lock in place. I tried re-installing it into the old lock it goes back into that one. Here's a photo of the core.

1. Can you tell from the photo if this core SHOULD fit this lock?
2. Is there anything I'm missing here?

It seems to me that the lock I received might just be defective because the core was in the old lock without a problem.

Possible problems:
1. the lock is defective
2. the core is being put in upside down
3. the tail piece or forks is too long
4. you forgot to use the control key

Try smacking the inserted core with a piece of wood and a soft hammer to see if it needs help seating.
Reach in with the core out, slide the knob retainer, and remove the knob. See if the core will seat in the knob while off the lock.

Without having it in front of me to coonfinger, these are only suggestions.
Good luck

Raymond, thanks for your reply.

1. The lock could be defective and this is what I'm thinking might be going on.
2. I tried the core the other way and it's CLEAR because the tailpiece hits the flat part of the figure eight shape opening and won't go in even half way.
3. The lock comes with two tailpieces "B6" and "B7". I've tried both but suspect I should use the "B7" tailpiece since this is a 7 pin core. I have also tried putting the core in without any tailpiece and it seems to fit but still I cannot return the control key to vertical.
4. I'm using the control key. Without the control key the core will not begin to enter the lock. I have also used the same key to remove the core (and put it back into) the original lock.

I tried removing the knob and couldn't figure out how. Here's a photo of the knob with core removed and a photo of the handbook showing how to remove the knob. Note, my photo shows the lock upside down relative to the handbook photo.
Also, note these exceptional instructions spell it "konb."

I've actually run into this before. In the first pic you posted in your note above, if you look at about the 1 o'clock position, at the top of the housing, do you see the little hole drilled into the handle body? Notice how that hole appears to have been drilled from the other side, and has quite a few burrs around it on the inside? Those are preventing the back of the core from mating fully with the back of the housing, which means the core is actually not in the housing far enough for the control lug to be able to engage (even though it appears flush with the face).

Technically you're correct, this means the part was not machined properly and could be considered defective. However this defect is quite common in that type, and not worth sending the unit back for. If you take a drill with a fairly large bit (in relation to the size of that hole) and go in there for half a second to knock off those burrs, your core should fit just fine. You don't have to drill all the way through, all you're looking to do is just clean up the edges on the inside. You may want to pull the outside knob off the spindle to get a bit better access, but you should be able to get it with it on as well.

Of course, make sure you also blow out all those metal shavings after you do, so they don't get into the mechanism and interfere with your lock operation down the road...

The lousy picture shows a rectangular knob retainer. The actual retainer is very visible from your photo. I would use an icepick or probe to catch in the hole on the right side of the photo. Push the horseshoe shaped clip to the left and pull off the knob as you hold pressure on the retainer. As demux stated the burr might be preventing the core from entering all the way. Taking off the knob will make access to the hole easier. Verify that the core will seat with the knob off. The knob seems to have an unusual lip around the opening of the figure-8. The core should probably fit inside of the lip??

I forgot to follow up on this. I contacted the site and they sent me a new lock. My SFIC fit just like I'm used to and I sent the busted one back to them with their label. :D
