How to open this vintage spaarpotten?

Postby Slimpickings1 » 15 Jan 2026 4:36

Does anyone know where I could purchase a key, or unlock this old coin bank? My friends son found this old thing and they want to reuse it again. It doesn't have pins, so I have no idea how to open it. The lock spins around and they cannot find the key or remember what the key looked like.

The key you need for your still bank is a flat key, either steel or brass. You can search for info on this forum by putting in 'still bank' in search area in upper right corner of LP 101 home page. Or Google it or go to Ebay.

If you look about halfway down this post, (right after the Yale Padlock), a section on making keys for lever locks. That is the kind of key your still bank uses. The method of making a key in that section of the post is exactly the way I make keys for still banks.

Is there another way? I cannot find any flat steel keys for sale in the Netherlands. I have to ship from the USA and the shipping costs alone is $25. That's kind of insane.

You could reach out to Jos Weyers at Toool.nl which is a hobby lock picking group. Perhaps they could impression a new key for you.

Or you can go to a hardware store and pick up a flat piece of steel of the correct thickness to fit in the lock, but not too loosely. Then you can cut it down and make your own blank with a Dremel or hacksaw.
