How to get key made for BKS 540 padlock

Postby YellowIronTherapy » 26 Feb 2026 12:29

Dear Lock Picking 101

Just joined and this post is my first one.

My grandfather was a realtor in Detroit, MI many years ago. When we cleaned out his house, we found two padlocks without keys that we would like to use again in his memory.

This post is for a BKS 540 padlock.

There are YouTube videos of this lock being picked but I have no background in locksmithing or lock picking. The goal is not to just open it but to get two functional keys made. Any and all guidance is appreciated.

Regards,

Herb Klei

So these are your choices,
have a key impressioned or dis assemble the padlock and take apart the cylinder to make the key

I would pick impressioning-- of course you could get another:

Will get check with local locksmith on impressioning. Buying the same lock with a key is almost certainly going to be the most cost effective route. Thanks,
