Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

I designed a mecanism to make off the shelf locks unpickable

It works by blocking access to the keyway before tension can be applied, its so simple that im pretty sure there are no workarounds possible (except decoding because i used a wafer lock but that can be fixed by replacing it with a good pintumbler so that's not the mechanisms fault :D )

This is a link to a showcase of the mechanism: https://youtu.be/huks34bNPaI?si=VVNyAUjmOHATGVxB&t=280 , i would very interested to hear what people more experienced in lockpicking have to say about the design because i don't have a lot of experience myself so maybe i overlooked something obvious.

That is an interesting design. I can think of a couple of rather easy destructive method to open it quickly without drilling, grinding or sawing. But non-destructive, it seems to be a good idea. But your tolerances for the blocking vertical slider would need to be rather tight to prevent tensioning, especially if you went to a pin tumbler mechanism.

I appreciate you sharing this idea with us. Well done!

the wafer lock has a lot of play before the wafers bind so the tolerancing on the slider can be pretty loose also, but if i were to switch to a pintumbler so it cant be decoded the tolerance on the slider would have to be better, yes, but i think still very doable with hand tools.

I do some of my best work with hand tools! Really like your out-of-the-box thinking. This would be a great idea for several applications, and would be better than a lot of stuff out there.

If you were to make the key into 2 parts, like the hotel lockout keys, then a person would also need to know how to extract the part that stays in the lock before they could even consider picking it.

Again, well done!

You might also consider attaching a 'ribbon' to the key that can be picked up to pull out the key.

I would also have considered a piece of metal attached to the key that would lay flat under the blocking slide. It could rotate under the blocking plate when opening and spring up slightly when the plate is raised. Is there room to simply bend the bow of the key blank? Food for thought.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
