Legality in Ontario?

Postby MrManson » 17 Mar 2026 4:50

I have read that in Canada, under the criminal code, it is illegal to have lock picking tools, and use them for break and enter, or to have them in possession without lawful purpose.

I did read that hobbying, is a lawful purpose.

I read that some provinces require licensing, but apparently ontario does not, so the only thing to really worry about is the federal law?

I assume that basically, for Ontarians, just don't have them anywhere suspicious or do anything stupid while possessing them, and you are basically best off just having them at home, or at a lock picking event, or a site where you have express permission to pick (like if someone wants your help?).

I'd also think having a couple of locks with the picks is a good idea. This would show that you have certain locks to pick and are (hopefully) not picking locks that you do not own. Also, don't pick locks in use (such as on your front door).
