How to hold a padlock

Postby raimundo » 11 Dec 2004 10:38

Many beginners working on padlocks unnecessarily handicap themselves and cause themselve to have very tired hands by not reconsidering the way that they hold the lock in their hand. If your hand is tired from holding the lock, you are holding it wrong. I use short, Varjeal calls them handless picks, I hold a padlock in my left hand between the thumb and last 3 fingers, leaving my index finger free to apply tension. If you try this, remember to move the lock to the position that is comfortable to hold it without unnecessary fatigue to the hand, and don't get a death grip on it, you are only holding a few ounces of metal. the way I hold a padlock if I am sitting in an easychair picking while watching tv, is the same way I hold it when its on a hasp or a chain. Any time you find your hand cramping or tired, it is time to reconsider the basic grip and find a better one.

So get really good at the ones you have right now and buy some new ones later when you have the cash.

I use this method perhaps 90% of the time, but sometimes it's just awkward. Sometimes I hold it "upsidedown" in my left hand...in relevant to raimundo's method. Just depends on the situation, and if you are actually out in the field or not...sometimes I hold it between my knees if it's big enough, and if I'm just randomly trying to find something to keep me busy.

My technique changes depending on which way the plug turns. if it turns clock wise i hold it with the tension wrecnh to the right and push down with my index finger. If the plug spins counter clockwise i put the tension wrench in to the left and push down with my thumb. I find i can get better control on the tension personally with a downward force instead of an upward force.

I get pissed off with really REALLY tiny locks, like luguage locks. They are SOOO simple, yet so tiny. I think the size of them was the key security feature x_x.

Oh yeah, and one of these days, I will be skilled enough to pick that lock I bought out of a quarter machine as a child >_<!!! (jk)
