I'm suprised at the number of military people on this site - guess I've never thought about it before.

I'm also suprised that we havn't heard from pheniox - (is he training to become a seal? or just a marine?) who owns a nice set of petersons I believe.

on the subject of military people having to buy their own equipment - I think this has been the case for as long as the military has existed and is the same with any profession. this is the reason that you can buy assault boots at oakley etc. if you're doing it for a living, you'll appreciate the better quality tools that enable you to do your job. I can imagine military guys buying their own knives etc just in the same way that I buy my own keyboard and mouse for my work (tax deduction of course).
Oh look! it's 2016!

erm.... SEAL as in the movie Under Seige... don't know if he can cook though.. I think the equivalent in non-US speak is SAS.. but that's the air force not the navy...

Navy SEALS, attack by Sea Air and Land, and but they are mostly aquatic. they took the place of the frogmen around the end of wwII. a member of any branch can apply to become a seal, usually rangers and that type, but they are part of the navy. they are the most ass kicking people in the world, they are americas swat team, and their training makes the marine basic look like a walk in the park. no one goes around shouting that they are a seal, (i dont know if they are told not to or just choose to) but there is a thing called the Wall of Shame sponsored by the seals which lists all the people who have claimed to be seals but never were. hope i cleared that up a bit, sorry if i stated anything incorectly or forgot something.

Without starting WW3 on here, we all know what SEAL's are i think ian was just poking a bit of christmas humour at you all.

We all know that the SAS is the daddy of all the outfits in this world and are not limited to the airforce.

The SEAL's is our American friends copy of the elite SAS we have and are very simular but not as good.

Basic. Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS. Actually walrus, it is Navy only. If you're in another branch you can request an inter-service transfer to the Navy, but a SEAL is Navy.

I always thought BUD/S was just the name of the course, while SEAL was the official designation of the units. As for SEALs or other US specwar units being the best at kicking ass, I'm somewhat doubtful. While I don't have any personal experiences in this area, I've heard quite often that they have too much of a cowboy/rambo/cooler-than-you attitude, which is something to avoid in this buisness. Personally I'd rather place my bets on SAS/SBS or maybe Israeli comandos, although the later seem to be handicapped sometimes by anti-arab rascism that leads them to underestimate their adversaries.

But to return to opening techniques, I don't think the Makita saw would be appropriate for most raids, as it creates a lot of noise as soon as it's started, before it hits the door, therefore taking away the element of surprise (or if you prefer that stupid term, shock and awe). As for picking by one way or another, I still don't think there's a place for it during raids. Pick guns appear to be very fast tools under training conditions, but as soon as you encounter a lock that maybe has too much dirt inside, it's not a 5-seconds opening anymorea and you'd better have kevlar in front of you by that time. And caring for other peoples locks and doors is cute and everything, but you can call it peacekeeping as often as you like, it's a war and it's a lost one. The battle for the hearts and minds of the population is over, now you either have them at your feet or at your throat. Therefore locksnappers, battering rams, hooligan bars and explosives should be the tools of choice. Maybe add pick axes while you're at it, because they are multi-purpose.
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

SAS all the way, did anyone see where the seal team tried to track down chris ryan the ex sas offficer through the jungle ? The seals couldnt quite get to grips or understand that he had evaded them for such a long time in a harsh enviroment. At the end of the day i think we can all be glad that our countries have exceptional soldiers like this as regardless of whos best (after the sas of course  ) they are al hard so and so's who save and protect lives.
