First of all, you'd be well advised to search through the common patent databases, as there's a high possibility that your idea isn't so new after all. After that it'd probably best to get the advice of a patent lawyer as these often know how to handle such things. But that's the point where it starts to get expensive, so your idea better be worth it. Remember that your lock not only needs to be secure but also cheap to manufacture and assemble, rugged enough to go through many thousand locking cycles without malfunctioning or being easily compromised due to increased wear, etc. You could also just try to offer your idea to lock companies directly but then you have to deal with nondisclosure agreements and stuff like that and you'd probably need the advice of a lawyer again.
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

I have had these ideas before too,

Postby raimundo » 15 Dec 2004 14:24

Just as push button combinations require the handle to turn to open the lock, I have the idea of a pin tumbler lock turned inside out, so that the key would just go in, not turn, and a movable part inside would be carrying the movable pins, operated by turning the handle. a key that only goes in and is not required to turn would not be so frequently broken off in the lock. Picture this, you push it in the keyhole, and turn the knob, it opens. the knob is connected to the moving parts. I have some elaborations at the back of the cylinder containing the moving rotating plug that would prevent tension from being applied against this part, Thats the secret part, but easy to imagine, there are a number of ways. For high security elaboration the pintumblers could also have a sidebar

I think that the ONLY perfect lock...is a dead bolt that is locked with a screw screwed in the keyhole...and after someone breaks the lock off, there is a 450 lb woman sitting on the other side in a rocker with a sawed off double barral shotgun with a slug ...and a buckshot :) (oh yes, I should design security for peope)

But seriously though, good luck on your idea, hopefully I'll be able to have a go at it with my picks some day ;)

Well, thanks for all thath info, it got me thinking espeacilly in the cheap to manufacture and assemble part.

I will be perfecting the idea becuse thats all i got for the moment, but it consists in a pin or more thath are set to high without the key in, i have already question myself if thath is possible but didnt encounter any impossabilty until now, this may already exist altough i hope not..

Just wish to say thanks to all again and happy holidays.
