Warded Master #22

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Warded Master #22

Postby GateTwelve » 17 Dec 2004 13:19

I have only seen one post on this particular lock here, and it was never resolved. I have already opened a number of warded padlocks with just my standard five piece warded lockpick set. However, the Master #22 is just pissing me off. I have tried for a couple days now, but to no avail.

I was wondering if anyone out there has any information about how to cut a custom pick for this lock, or if there is some simple trick to it that I am overlooking. Chuklz, you said something about two springs needing to expanded. Would you mind expounding?

The easiest way to explain this is to take one of these locks apart. At the "top" of the lock body, there will be either one or two bent pieces of metal that look a bit like cotter pins. On the locks that have only one of these locking devices, you use the tool with only one set of projections at the tip. For the locks that have two springs, such as the 22, use the tool that has two sets of projections. You may have to pull back slightly and try again.

Thanks for the advice, Chucklz. But I must just be unusually bad at this lock. No matter which pick I use, I cannot get it open. Maybe I'll just rip it apart to see it's innerworkings so I may get a better idea of what's going on in this lock in particular. If there's anymore advice out there for it, I'd still love to hear.

Grind the rivet heads off the bottom of the lock. Pop of each plate, and keep them in the right order. Like most things, the best way to really understand how something works is to tear it apart.

Well, I didn't quite want to rip apart that first master yet. So I bought a few more 22s. I did some impressioning on them, and found that the tip of meh double lever pick was too long for the projections to get down to the levers. So I filed off the tip of my pick, and I can get all of the 22s open now with no problem.

Except for the original one that I posted about, it seems to still be immune to these picks. I was able to shim the deepest lever open, and pick the other lever with a single bar warded pick, but that's almost like cheating. I want to know how to do this entirely with warded lock picks.

Can use the pick that is in the exact middle of this picture below to open a Masterlock 22? It's the one with the two circles:
