My new Lockwood locks - Are they tough?

Postby meat-bix » 20 Dec 2004 4:17

Hi, I'm new here, and I read the stickies and had a good search before I started writing :0)

So I figure i'll try my hand at lock picking. I like working with my hands and it looks to be good fun and pretty satisfying. Also it's got that cool element. honk!

Anyway, I bought five locks off ebay and picked them up today(picked up, not picked). I'll start making some tools this week i guess, and get started trying them out.
But before I do that, I wanted to know how difficult these locks (all the same type) are to pick. No use starting on something difficult and getting discouraged I think.

I cant find any "C4" or "777" which I have heard you talking about before.

The "product no" on all of the locks is 201CYLSC.

The "stampings" (according to the box, and engraved on the bottom of the locks) are:

1L227
1L251
1L238
1L234
and 83-54

The (front of the) plug in the 83-54 lock seems to be mirrorred of the others. I guess thats why it is different.
If you want some photos I can manage that with a webcam :0P

So how difficult are these locks to pick? Good for a starter?

I look forward to lock picking, and asking lots of questions.
Thanks alot.

201CYLSC

201 Cylinder Satin Chrome
Key Profile C4
777 Deadbolts are found everwhere except for ebay as they are not that great for practice locks - larger than 201 replacements.

83-54 - what brand? sounds like an abus padlock - if the cylinder is the mirrored version of the 201's that is called C4R (c4 reverse)

These locks vary - some can be easy and some wont...

goodluck with them :)

Thanks alot :0)
the 83-54 is the same Product number. Same lock, just mirrored.

So C4 is the 'key profile'?
From the looks of it, the groove in the key, and coresponding rail in the lock (are they called rails) look to be quite high up, and close to the bottom pin. Does that make things harder?

Sorry, there isn't a whole lot available to the locksmith on Australia that I know of....

the "rails" are best known as wards .

C4 profile cylinders are easy. no problems, it is a standard cylinder that most of australia use on their doors.

C4R is also easy, if you are in Australia you can buy these key blanks from most hardware stores.

btw, are you in Australia?

Yep, I'm in Australia.

Good to hear that about C4 locks. Encouraging.

Wards was the word I was after, thanks. :0)

Just a question, a 'profile' is what the hole shape is like yeah?
So you can stick in a key with different sized cuts, but a key with a different profile will not fit because the wards will be placed differently?

A 777 deadlock is no harder to pick than any other c4 lock, but it is much harder to force open than most other c4 locks.

true Oldlock, they are also harder to remove due to the hidden screws, also, the 3 around my house have spool pins.

yes, for example: A YAL3 or YA1 key cant fit in a C4 cylinder because they have the wrong profile :)

Im off to grind up some blades later today :0)

It seems to me that there isnt enough room between the bottom pins and the top ward for a pick to fit.
I'll figure it out I guess...

Wish me luck :)
