The problem is, what's broke about this site hasn't been fixed.
...but that is a different topic entirely.

So, what I hear folks saying is 'how 'bout a more accurate representation of the hardware talked about'. And hopefully this will stimulate discussion and creative ideas. Topics about the dyno and SO jacknife, which are few and far between, pretty much result in unanimous thumbs down so, indeed, other forms of hardware are more widely used. Seems to me, tool categories can be winnowed down to professional grade and homebrew/improvised.

I came across some simple PHP code, in Webmastering for Dummies  , which rotates any lineup of JPGs as a page is refreshed. If the list were 30 images or more the impression of favoritism would take a while to develop.

Banner submissions relevant to category would be another great contest idea.

How about instead of lockpicks, we put an artistic internal diagram of a pin tumbler lock or something?

I sure did not mean to be the hand up Mona Lisa's skirt so to speak, but my idle rant has definitely sparked some chatter. Please don't take my post the wrong way as I mean no harm and have become addicted to this site as it is a wealth of great info and people. The current logo has aesthetic merit, but just seemed to lack cojones IMO. As I am somewhat of a noob to this site, I don't want anyone to think I'm showing any disrespect.

On a side note... Just finished making an absolutely kickass batch of boilo for the holliday season... Getting ready for sipping pleasure on cold nights while enjoying the forum... An early Happy Hollidays to all...

Its possible the logo was picked for a reason. During the designing, a few picks and a tension wrench might have looked like a few pens or something, and using a pick gun might have appeared to be a gun. Numerous configurations could have been tried before settling on the dyno and jacknife. I know when you are trying to design something like that, what you originally wanted doesn't quite work.

Though the dyno and jacknife are looked down upon, they are both very recognizable.

Ceci n'est pas une pick?

I like the logo. I think it's esthetically pleasing and that the actual content is viscerally inspiring in it's mediocrity.

The portrayal of what many seem to regard as lower quality tools strikes me as very appropriate given that, while there are many in-depth discussions on this site about various and sundry products and their merits, technique and practice are nearly always the bottom line. Nothing promotes technique like substandard equipment.

That logo says that LP101 is a community of people who value skills beyond specialized hardware but that we are still aware that specialized hardware exists and can be beneficial to us - more so even than paperclips, bic pens and other desk supplies.

It also says that we are an open and welcoming community interested in the purest, most noble and innocuous forms of locksports: welcome to you from all walks of life and do not be intimidated if you don't know that these are actually not very good picks at all.

This may seem at odds with my glowing posts about Raimundo's picks: well, if I'd had his picks straight away would I have appreciated them? Not as much as if I hadn't been messing about with HPC and LAB and Peterson. It was the banal that made me appreciate the light of true art.

Lastly, for me the challenge in lockpicking comes in manipulating things in a manner not consistent with the manufacturer's design. What could be more of a triumph than manipulating a lock with something not designed to manipulate a lock? Or at least not designed well?

I get shivers just thinking about it.

I'm sure Mr.Picks thought of exactly that when he commissioned it. :)

logo renewal

Postby raimundo » 22 Dec 2004 15:14

I got it! Someone create an animated cutaway of a pin tumbler lock where the key goes in and turns, then the key is pulled out, and a pick goes in and pins hang up at shear, or at serrations and mushrooms, in random order, then the pick goes in and feels these out and works them out. make it a threequarter view, so you can see the thing simultaneously from the side and get a view of the front, so you can watch the spool pins hang it up, the thing would be a tutorial as well as a logo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :D I'm sure Mr Picks could be influenced to put it on if someone created it really well.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Hooray for Blender! Hooray for open sorce!

With that said, I kind of like the idea of a cut-away view of a tumbler lock lock being picked.....Or not picked. Some little guy looking at a lock scracthing his head might be kind of cool.

I still don't have a problem with the original logo though. I came here for knowledge and the logo hadn't even flashed into my mind until now.

I think it should be a cutaway of a lock and a pick repeatedly picking the lock....I love those pics.

Which is why I think we should hold a contest where people can submit ideas and images, and we vote on which one is the best.

A new pickset might not be the best prize, but it would definatly boost peoples attempts.
