is the disk tumbler lock they send for lesson 11-1 supposed to only have 2 disks, mine does, it was TOO easy to pick, my dad did it!! without a tension wrench!!! i may give them a call later, i learned how the lock operates, but not much on the picking side. :x

Yes I believe it has only 2 disks/wafers in it because that lesson, if memory serves me correctly, covers inpressioning and they want to start you off easy with that. They don't get into a great deal about picking, just give you the basics. I was really suprised at how easy it was to file a little to heavy or fast and take off too much in a hurry. Impressioning definitly takes practice, just like picking.

Good luck with the rest of your course!!!

My lock for lesson 11-1 came with 5 wafers/disks, and the text I just received states to take the lock apart (and gives instructions how to do it) and remove all but two wafers to begin picking. It then tells me to add wafers back in as I become better. Just be careful, because those springs are very small!

Shipping Question on the FB Course

Postby scotthay » 21 Dec 2004 20:43

I just received my box with my first lessions from Foley Belsaw. I have been wanting to take the course since I was a kid, my brother took it back in the 70's and as a kid I read the entire course and learned to use the picks and how locks work, etc.

Since this is my first post here, a little background on me.

As an adult, I worked in the commercial hardware distribution business for a number of years, took several courses by Schlage and other hardware manufacturers along the way. I was reading this site a couple weeks ago and it gave me the bug to take the course even though it will probably be more of a refresher for me. I have set up keying systems for commercial buildings from 20-2000 doors, multiple buildings, great grand master systems, etc. I have taken the DHI AHC classes, certified door consultant courses, I am a certified automatic door inspector, etc. But this will be fun anyway, so I signed up and per others recommendations I told them I wanted the $599 deal with the free pick gun and they signed me up.

My question to some of you is, I read in this thread somewhere that others that paid all upfront for the course got postage prepaid labels to send their stuff back for grading. I did not receive this and wanted to verify that others did get this before I call and ask for the same from F-B.

Thanks for the help.

If you pay up-front, F-B does not charge you a shipping charge to recieve your lessons. You still have to pay the postage to send the lessons back to them.

Ok.. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

In case anyone else is taking the course and is interested, the vise that they advertise at the end of lesson 10 for $36.95 plus shipping is available from Harbor Freight Tools online for $16.99, the link for it is

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... umber=3311

And the item number in case that doesn't work is 3311-OVGA

Thanks, I thought it would be sorta nice to have. That's pretty funny how much they mark up on stuff like that.

I keep reading in here about people getting the FB course for less than the $769 they want to charge me. On top of that, they are getting "goodies" along with it (pick gun, etc).
How do I go about paying less than the almost $800 they want?

I would assume you call them up and say "I saw your advertisement to get the foley belsaw locksmithing course at $600 with a free pick gun"

Also, does anyone know how low they go on the monthly payments?

Actually it looks like $19 down and $37/month is the lowest they will go on the payment plan.

As far as getting the course cheaper, i just waited for a couple months and they sent offers in the mail that got cheaper each time. When I saw that the price bottomed out I went ahead and signed up.

I just registered for it. $15 down and $29 a month for a total of $599 + sales tax. I'm really looking forward to it. I lost my order form that they sent me, so I just called them up and asked to reigster for $600.

I went ahead and signed up. So far it is really interesting. One question I have is do they send your student ID and payment info (im on the payment plan) separately from the lesson packets?

I'm on the payment plan too, and my student ID and payment info came in a seperate envelope about 4 days after receiving my first set of lessons.
