Legge 5 lever

Postby skold » 23 Dec 2004 5:24

:D :D i got the chance to play with a 5 lever legge with anti pick levers (not sure if they have a special name)

i had it open in 5 minutes with some homemade tools...

is this lock generally hard or do i just suck at lever locks?

anywho im happy about it..won $20 too :D

edited by myself

i have some questions to ask -

i have heard these things about Curtains and other things..not being too well educated with lever locks i was wondering what they are, their purpose and how they make the lock more pick resistant.

and these "curtain" picks - do i have to buy them or can they be home made?

Thanks in advance for someone possibly answering my (hopefully) well formed post...maybe the n00bs could learn something :)

if some of this information could be found by searching i couldn't find it so no flames please.

edited again

does any one want tell me also what these might be?

1. Portcullis tool blocking design

2. Talon bolt with lever lock down system

Thanks Oldlock for these words that i have no idea about - except the Talon bolt

It seems after picking that legge im now addicted to lever locks :)

The yellow ones are quite easy to pick. The black ones are an absolute bugger without using a pin & cam, although it does vary depending on the presence of some deep levers.

The black ones are techincally different as they are made to confirm with the British Standard for theif resistant locks which requires the lock to pass certain tests etc.

As to your last question on your first post I doubt anyone will know .... :)

You can probably order one, but they are horrifically expensive ! Which is a joke when you know (as I do) what they used to cost in the UK

As to technical differences I will have a look over the weekend as I have some of the black ones (somewhere) and take some pictures.

hmm they are interesting lock lever locks...i suppose the fact that they are different makes them interesting to me...before i go ordering i think i will buy a few zenith 3 lever mortice's to practice on which are around $25 each, more than a decent Whitco tasman/euro cylinder
Those pics would be great Oldlock :)

Tasman - Decent ???

Tasman - junk more like !

Most locksmiths have more than a few old Lane mortice locks, 1000's - 4000's etc knocking around, we must have a few at work ... Personally I would try and get something like that rather than the zenith junk.

so they are expencive shiny crap,,,i like them because they are easy to rekey...maybe they are crap

yeah, i might ask one of the bilock dealers when i get my bilock rekeyed if i could have a few old ones- yeah zenith is pretty crap...they should stick to making screws and bolts.

btw...can someone answer my curtain question?

From your original post: The curtain is the usually 'metal coloured' thingy in the keyhole which you turn whilst picking (or using the key) and usually interacts directly with the bolt. (Bad description, I know) It makes 2 in 1 picks un-usable by restricting movement so you can't apply tension to the bolt and lift the levers at the same time. A curtain pick can get past this on some locks.

BTW, what tools did you use - Wires? - Really quite an anchievment after never even taking a look at one before. As oldlock said, as lever locks go, they're fairly easy but well done!
