Mine a manual one, you have to adjust the tension and if useing on American locks turn it upside down for best results.

I am not a newb, nor was I trying to offend anyone. I am simply saying I have heard a lot of bad remarks about pick guns... That's all, I don't want to start a fight about picks and pick guns here... :)
Wouldn't it be cool if you could look at people and make their heads explode?

That's an old fight. You didn't start it, and you're certainly not going to be finishing it.

Each of these tools has their place.

Pick guns

Postby digital_blue » 10 Jan 2005 19:56

I have the Southord LAT-17 snap gun and have used it successfully a number of times (though it certainly does take the fun away). After following a thread on this site about homemade snap guns I tried my hand at it the other night. I found that a snap gun I made in 15 minutes out of a wire coat hanger actually works considerably better than the commercially purchased unit.

Also, I read somewhere that using a snap gun puts considerable wear on the pins and makes the lock less secure and easier to pick. I don't remember where I read this but the author was pretty clear that he felt if a pick gun was used, you might as well throw out the lock. Seems a bit extreme. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

You don't need to throw the lock out, but I would consider replacing the springs. Even a mechanical gun can wreck the springs.

Pick guns can hurt the pins, but they dont make the lock easier to pick... I find em useful in ungumming locks. Also they do have a great place in some situations, i have a padlock that has been to hell and back, tension when hand picking is imposible because of gunk, to get the right tension is somewhat almost impossible. With the gun 4 snaps and it opens up...

Pick Guns

Postby steve16 » 30 Jan 2005 19:27

AHH... PICK GUNS.. you love them or hate them. I have been very successful with the LockAid gun that get used daily. The downfall is that you can knock off the pin retainer if its not on tight. You will know when the plug is difficult to turn and then its time to re-pin your lock. LockAid does have a free lifetime replacment of the springs and stands behind their products..
