Help needed with this padlock.

Postby meat-bix » 31 Dec 2004 20:39

This would have been the first lock I had picked for a purpose other than for the sake of picking. If I had been able to pick it that is...

Some people locked a padlock onto my friends arm band thing in their cold reptilian haste, and I offered to try to pick it off for him.

It seems that it's really easy to set 5 pins, becasue every time I let the tension go i hear 4 or 5 clicks. I may have even heard 6 a couple of times....

Any suggestions on this particular lock?

Thanks alot.

Forgot to add, which way would you turn?
I have been going clockwise, but I have tried both. When turning anti-clockwise is is harder to set pins.

Looks like a kinds of cheap lock.

Sounds like your feeling the pressure of an audience.

Helps to try a light touch i think. Cant make any more suggestions, sorry.

No audience pressure. I took it home with me and have been trying it by myself...

Thanks.

Which direction has more play when you try to turn the cylindar? In other words, before picking it, in which direction can you turn the lock more with just the wrench? That's going to (probably) be your direction. Before you start, you should probably be sure about the number of pins you have. Get a pick in there and push it allllll the way to the back, and then bring it forward slowly, counting the pins. That will give you an idea of what to try for. If it feels like you've set all the pins but the lock still won't open, try easing off the tension little by little; you may have set one or two too high, and backing off will let them drop into place. I've had many locks pop open doing this. What have you tried so far: raking or just setting them by hand?

Thanks alot samurai :0)

There are five pins.

It turns clockwise more. (a fair bit more too)

I have tried raking, and sort of picking (though my picking skills are yet to be refined).

I'll give it another go now and take some of that advice, then get back and let you know how it went.
Thanks again.

Cheers andy.

This is driving me nuts. I will clearly hear 5 clicks when I slowly release the tension...

Nothing!

Ah well, keep at it I guess...

The pins are setting either too high or too low. Try easing up on your tension a bit; don't turn so hard. Not much other advice other than to be patient and keep at it. Take breaks if you feel yourself getting frustrated.

This is a lock commonly found at safeway and woolworths in australia, the brand is either AAA or P.H Prager.

Lock specs:
5 mushroom driver pins
- there is 2 levers at the back which can be by passed by jiggling a hook at the back of the cylinder -
These are not an easy lock to pick for a beginner, they are easy to bypass though.

And yes, this opens clockwise.

Yeah, thought so, they are the same lock, both chinese, but with different badges.

Useless locks, if you drop it on the concrete just right, they pop open :)

Im a beginner too. In this country, there are no shops where you can get picks sets, so I had to make 'em by myself. Im unable to lockpick this lock, becouse my picks are too big and the keyway too small. :( Simply I can't get in!
