Newbie with a pick set

Postby BarleyMob » 10 Jan 2005 13:25

I just got my 14 peice pickset in the mail 2 days ago, just finished reading The Guide to Lockpicking for my second time and i still dont understand alot of this. I think if i knew which picks to actually use on the lock would help me, but i dont know which pick is which. After receiving the pickset, I used the full circle pick to open a magnum lock that i have, but it seems that this is the only pick that i can open the lock with, why is that? Then within the guide it tells me to use a torque and a pick, what the hell is the torque and which pick do they want me to use? And do i really need to use both the torque and a pick, when on my first try(probably begginners luck) I opened the lock with the pick alone(not knowing how or why to use the torque).

thanks,
BarleyMob

I'm a newbie too and found that for the basic this thing can help you big time...

http://home.howstuffworks.com/lock-picking.htm

Just read through and use the little animations...

--

This link can also help a lot... But I would recommend reading the "how stuff work" one first... Since those animations can really help you visualising the whole process...

http://www.lysator.liu.se/mit-guide/mit-guide.html

--

And for the use of each specific pick well I can't help you on this, it's hard to tell in word "which pick should be used for what"...

And the tension wrench which is used to apply some torque is supposed to be necessary... Well you'll see when looking at the "how stuff work" link...

good luck

No problem :) next time I would suggest you try to search a little bit on the forum (especially the "faqs" and stuff) because a lot of people seem to hate it when people ask so called "noob" question that you could/should have gotten the info by searching a little on the forum :)

mainly i use the hook but some prefer the half diamond picks. you need the torque and the pick so that you dont break the pick. its just a thin piece of spring steel that the picks are made of so it wont be too hard to break em. just dont over torque it. thats the mistake i made when i started and the mistake alot of newbies make...happy picking

The tension wrench(torque tool) is used to bind the pins, and turn the lock. When you apply a light bit of pressure one pin will catch before the rest. You use the hook aka the feeler, or finger to push the pin to the sheer line, and then move to the next binding pin. You can't make pins bind with a pick, and pick the lock with it at the same time, plus yeah the pick would break if you could. If you push to hard, you will block yourself from pushing the pin.
I hope this clears you up a little, because the tension wrench is almost as important as the picks them selves.
Ball(full circle): wafer locks, you know the ones with square things instead of pins
Diamond(half triangle): a type of rake, which can also be used as a pick
C rake aka snake, and standard rake(the curvy one): a type of rake that is most commonly used when raking
Feeler(the hook shaped one): used to pick one pin at a time

the key has 2 videos there which give you a good visual reference.
Don't concern yourself with your other picks until you can use those ones
Primarily use the feeler to get good at "picking"

Thank you for the help, but I was asking what the tension wrench looked like, opposed to what it was used for. Sorry for any misunderstandings, but thanks for the other help.

I also found this site to be a BIG help, http://dp.penix.org/locks/cl.html , for anyone else that might be stuck. After I went through this site, the MIT guide and everything else fell into place for me and I finally picked my first magnum lock. Now I just have to go out and buy another lock, , only if I wasnt too lazy. A wise Norwegian Proverb says, "The lazier a man is, the more he plans to do tomorrow."
On that note, thanks again for the help everyone.

I dont know if you read this yet or not but some padlocks can be opened just with a pick. Instead of picking the lock you bypass the lock and move the lever that keeps the shackle in place. When you do this it creates the same effect as turning the plug but you pick nothing, You just have to move the lever. I have one really cheap lock like this but it is the only one. If you buy a more expensive lock it shouldnt be able to do this.

Benzy2 - I think thats why i was able to pick this magnum lock with just the full circle pick. Can the locks still be picked by each pin though? How come I was only able to find the lever with the full circle pick and not my hook or half diamond pick?

You can still pick it pin by pin. The pins are still there and still follow the same guidelines as other locks do. As for why that is the only pick that did it, i would say it was just the right size to hit the lever. The others may come too high or too low. Not really sure though. That is just my guess.
