Help me choose a pick set.

Hey, I just began picking this week after reading/printing off a 22 page guide on picking similar to the mit one. Well by the end of the first night I picked my first padlock and have only progressed. This was using a small flat head screwdriver and a safety pin picking pin by pin, I haven't gotten that raking technique down yet. Anyways Im interested in investing in a pick set. I don't have much to spend right now since I am not shure If I really want to pursue locksmithing so I am looking at a set in the 30 dollar price range. Any comments are appreciated, sorry if some sort of review database is located somewhere but I searched briefly and didn't find one so I made this thread. Thanks for the help guys.

Thats a good start, and your selection for a first lockpicking set seems good. Contains all the important picks plus. Go for it.

I'm not too sure about lockpickshop.com but I'm reletively sure lockpicks.com does. They don't seem to have the same set or price though.

Yeah they are a good 10 dollars more on most of there kits I found a few regular spring steel kits for 30 dollars. I sent lockpickshop an email so I can double check if they take MO's or not.

www.Unlockables.com and www.southord.com both take MOs, by the way, as well as www.lockpicktools.com. I've ordered from the first two, and they were great. Haven't ordered from lockpicktools yet, but I plan to.

Yeah lockpickshop.com does not and they won't send to a different address than the paypal one so I can't order from them. Which set would you reccomend from those places posted for around 30 dollars?

They have one without the slip on grips for 10 dollars more? I hope this kit is the same quality, I just think the grips would be more comfortable.

Ugh, all the sites that take money orders requier proof of age, lockpicks.com only says it in real small font on the agreement contract though so maybe they will let it go through, SouthHord says it on the final order screen that you have to have proof of age so I think they are more strict about it. I don't know how I would be able to get my hands on a kit unless I can find a reliable person to do a third party type thing for me.

I have done business with lockpickshop.com and was very happy. I'm not aware of their payment methods, but if you had to have them shipped to your friends address 'cause it was his paypal account, that would probably work out ok. I read somewhere in the FAQ section of this site that you get 10% off at lockpickshop.com if you are a member of this site. (As I recall, it involved putting LP101 in the coupon section... check it out in the FAQs to be sure tho). The Southord set you were looking at first seems like it would be a great set to start with and you probably would not do wrong by doing business with lockpickshop.com. *

No they don't. Both Southord and Unlockables say they require proof of age on their site, but as the very helpful poisoned told me: "No one really cares how old u are".

explain... I don't want to wait a week after I send the money order out only to get a envelope with the money back in it saying they need an id. You think they will just overlook it if I send it it?

My two cents on this one. I started picking at 16 when I bought a set at a "spy shop" while doing research for a report I was writing on national security. The individual selling them was not particlarly dissuaded by the fact that I was an unstable youth of questionable hygene. I have never been questioned about my age since then, and have bought numerous pick sets. My advice to you would be to buy the picks as per normal, and if questioned about your age be forthcoming. Understand that pursuit of this particular hobby does not in any way make you some sort of criminal, and in fact has the potential to make you a highly paid tradesman in your future. It is a very unique skill that requires a great deal of patience and dicipline that is often uncharacteristic of teenagers.
