Homemade pick set No. 1243

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Homemade pick set No. 1243

Postby bembel » 18 Jan 2005 12:29

I've already posted some of them before, but this should be the final set. Made of feeler gauges from 0.5mm up to 0.8mm, some Allen wrenches + wiper blades for tension and a homemade plug spinner (yes, it works... at least most of the time ;) ).

I don't want to conceal that it did cost me about EUR 70 of material, including the camera bag. Especially the feeler gauges were pretty expensive, I needed a lot of them.
Could have spent the money for a professional set easily, but after all, where's the fun? :)

bembel, that is a beautiful set! Well done!

I'd love info on how you made that plug spinner. Materials used, etc.

The plug spinner was made of one of those gadgets to measure the profile depth of car wheels.

I just put a spring coil over it and drilled a hole in the aluminium stick to put one end of the coil through it.

I am working on another one with a more convienient handle, but unfortunately it will be too big for my camera bag.
It's not finished yet, I still need to flatten the bolt on the left hand to fit into a lock.

bembels Homemade Picks

Postby David_Parker » 18 Jan 2005 15:59

God#$^& you Bembel!

I pray every night that you suffer a horrible accident where you hands are severed.

....I'm just kidding Bembel. We should all stop and marvel at your pick making talents. In my opinion, they've no-longer hold the line of 'Homemade' or DIY, but jump up to Commercial Quality. If not commercial, near close.

And KICKIN' job on the Homemade Plugspinner.

All in all, nicely done Bembel.

Ok, bear with me a moment...

I've never actually owned a plug spinner, but I thought I had the concept figured out. But doesn't it have to be locked and triggered somehow? Maybe I'm just confused about how these things work, but I thought it would be something that you wind up and lock into place, put into the keyway, and trigger to release so it will snap around ... no?

Looking at your designs, I don't think I get how it works.

(In the mean time, it's still pretty, and I like pretty things. :P )

Bembels homemade picks: feeler gauges

Postby David_Parker » 18 Jan 2005 20:23

Hey Bembel...any way you could go through step by step as towards how you made your picks? I've got some feeler gauges, but they don't meet the lenghth measurements that you have.

Basically what I'm looking for is the type of feeler gauge that you used, but photos of how you made your picks would probably make many fellow posters happy.

Thanks if you can.

Thanks for your comments, especially to those who also make their own picks. I appreciate that. :)
(and I'll take special care now to have no terrible accidents with my hands ;) )

@David_Parker: The extra long gauges I use are from HaWe, that seems to be a German company. I always buy them at "Hornbach" markets throughout Germany, but this is probably not too much useful information for you when you're from TX (Texas?). Sorry about that. :(

I also cannot provide you with pictures of making them, because I simply wouldn't know what to show. Basically its' just a vice, some excellent files and a Dremel. The gauges are glued together (Pattex Classic) like a sandwich. Very easy to copy them.

@digital_blue: Right, they don't have a trigger.
You just wind them up a bit, let's say 180 degrees counter-clockwise, put them into a lock and then let it go. The coils I use are powerful enough to build up enough torque. Got them from a hardware shop.

Most excellent. I think you said this before but, how did you make your handles?

Did you post closeups of your jigglers anywhere? - 1st through 5th from the left.

Cost overruns are not proudly admitted but I don't admire my SO set as much as I do my DIY inventory.
