What am i up against here ?

Postby RangerF150 » 22 Jan 2005 18:26

HI all !
I ain't posted a question in a while , cos i am busy still workin on a basic lock .
This pickin business is taking a tad longer to learn than i figured , that's good , it's a challenge :-)

I have a lock , i picked twice in about three months :-(
First was luck , second was eh, i guess luck too !!!

It's very badly machined , set a pin or two , and the barrell shifts several mils or so .

However when i push on some pins , i feel it kickin back a bit ?
I figure it could be security pins ?

If i try set one of these pins it pushes the barrell back and "seems" to set, but unsetting sveral other pins in the process .

Id say there are about three of these pins .

It's a nice lock to try pick cos you "think" it's about to go then , no way !

Any insight would be great !

As value for money goes , lock pickin is a great hobby :-)

Good luck and thanks for any advice .

Sounds like spool pins.

The one you are setting, and causing the others to unset, is not a problem.
Let the other ones do whatever happens to them, and get them again after you set the one in question.

Ah, but I understand there is often a particular order in which the pins have to be picked in a given lock. Suppose the required picking order places one of the spool pins last?

Instead, how about careful control of the tension? When the narrow part of the spool pin crosses the shear line, don't allow the plug to turn but keep it upright with just enough tension to hold the already set pins. Then keep lifting the spool pin until resistance returns and the pin eventually sets properly.

I believe this would be easier to do if you don't have a springy tension tool. You need a very rigid tool like a filed down allen key or something like the Falle-Safe tool. I think it also needs a very delicate touch.

Thanks for that bit of advice :-)

I opened it 3 times tonight , best time 6 mins !

Me happy :-)

It's a nasty lock for sure , but i do think if i can get a handle on it , it will serve me well ....

And i guess i better withdraw the bit about it being badly machined. I guess that's the spool pins in action ...

I've learned quite a bit from this lock , patience being one !

Thanks all :-)

Of course the other way is to lift the spool pins higher than the shear line then let them drop back slowly for them to set
