Bench grinders

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Bench grinders

Postby Crypto » 30 Jan 2005 16:38

I was wonder if I should buy a bench grinder with variable speeds or If I should just buy a one speed grinder. I am planning on using it around the
house for general use purposes and making picks. I would like to know what type of models everyone esle is using. Thanks

you dont need a grinder. Buy sandstones (the things to grind metal) attachments for a drill, then attach it to a drill press. Its what I do and I've made a few picks already

I have been using a 6" single speed bench grinder made by Mastercraft. I think Mastercraft is only available in Canada through Canadian Tire (I could be wrong tho). The point is, it is a pretty cheap grinder that does the job quite nicely.

However, I have been seriously considering a wet grinder they have available. I am curious if anyone has experience making picks with a wet grinder? Does it eliminate the need for quenching? That would certainly speed up the process.

Thanks for all of the responses. I am probably going to buy the one speed grinder.

If your willing to spend the money, i would recomend a variable speed grinder, just so the picks wont get so hot so quickly, if its for general purposes to, then yeh get a variable speed grinder, because some metal chips of in huge peices when grinding at high speeds
