I'm Not sure what i want

Postby Geek142 » 9 Feb 2005 20:25

Hey everyone hope your having a nice day/night

I am not sure what I want anymore….

First off on Pyros movie (Loved it) he mentions that you should never need to purchase picks from another manufacturer.

Second I hear some people say you should buy a set so when you make your own you know what size and what the pick heads should actually look like.

I am stuck between the 2 because I want to buy a set but I don’t know if I should actually use my money if there is no point buying a proper set because you can make you own.

Well thanks for all your help, Sorry if this has already been asked but I couldn’t find it in search.

Bye
:D

If you have the money, buy a set.

It is a good idea to buy a professionally manufactured set, because, as you stated, they're good to learn off of when making your own picks. On the other hand, chances of you trying to make picks if you have your own set is less. And if you're going to buy a set, you won't need to buy what is listed on most sites as a "professional set". all you would need is a nice 14 piece set, or, the smallest available site. You can find a small, reasonable set on www.lockpickshop.com .
I personally think you should try making your own picks first, then buy a set. It will take a will and a few hacksaw blades or feeler gauges but you'll get it.

HPC picks are lovely, at least the ones I've had a chance to use. I also recommend buying a small professional set, so that you get a better idea of the size of picks. It is very difficult to just "guess" from most photos posted, at least before you've had some already made picks to get a general idea.

Hi Geek. If memory serves, you have already made a very nice set of tools and I imagine you quite enjoyed making them. That in mind, I don't think there's any risk in buying a set and never making tools again. I owned a pro-made set before I ever made a pick, and I'm glad to have both. I'm glad you've decided to buy a set. THe few bucks you'll spend on them will be forgotten, in all likelihood, even before you receive the set, but the tools will last for ages.

Happy pick picking! ;)

I was asking the same question...silently

Postby noctaeon » 10 Feb 2005 1:17

I have been asking myself if i should continue with the pathetic ones ive created out of my head before seein pyros vid or purchase a set

my conclusion: I have studied the fotos from a site that contains the picks next to a ruler and sized them to actual size in adobe pphotoshop and shall try to make duplicates from common material found here in my house we do metal craft and such so have tons of tools at my disposal wish me luck or Gods blessing whichever...g'luck with yours too geek

Geek142,

I have several styles on my ftp site that can be uses as templates if printed to the scale included in the picture. I have made picks off of these picuteres myself and had good luck so I know you can do it too. If you need to know how to log in search for will post pick templates with zeke79 as the author.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

it all comes down to personal preference and sometimes finance, if you have the money, the will and would like to buy a set, then go for it
