OK, I think I got it now. So the pins do not rotate 360 degrees in the stack, but rather, have a 35-45 degree range of motion. David_Parker, on this lock, it would not be easier, in my opinion, to drill because they have hardened inserts, and besides, that would ruin my practice lock! Thanks all for your replies

The angled cuts on a Medeco key can be perpendicular (center angle) or 20 degrees offset in either direction - creating the left & right angle cuts. The pins rotate to accomodate the matching angle position on the key.

The locator tab on the pins prevents the rotation of the pin more than say 50 degrees total - approximately.

There are false grooves on some bottom pins which will be caught by the sidebar when you are placing torque on the plug. This of course makes picking more difficult since you may not be able to tell when the true slot is aligned with the sidebar.
