Picking a Best Padlock

Postby Runcade » 14 Feb 2005 17:27

I live in a house that is owned by the college we all attend. The basement door had a padlock on it. We had been down there when security opened it to reset a circuit breaker so we knew it wasn't that cool to see. Some drunken friends decided that they wanted to see it and when we weren't around they busted up the latch pretty well and gouged the door. We did not want to get charged by the college so we fixed it all except that the padlock is still stuck on the old latch. Only the college has a key and we just want to unlock it and reattach it to the new latch. We tryed to get a locksmith to open it but he wouldn't so I figured I would post here and see what happens.

Here are two pictures of the lock. The brand is best. The body is about 2 inches tall by an inch and a half. On the bottom it says v 10.

If there is any easy way to open this lock we would appreciate any tips.

You really can't do it secretly, someone is bound to find out sooner or later.

If a locksmith on the spot was not willing to help, I don't see how an anonymous internet forum can do what the locksmith wouldn't.

I'm sorry, but I think you need to accept responsibility, notify the college authorities, and get them to open the lock for you. If explain what happened, and you repaired the door well, maybe they won't charge you.

Did you bring the lock to a locksmith or is it still attached to the wall when the locksmith looked at it?? If you had a locksmith come to the house, remove the lock from the wall and take it to a locksmiths shop. Tell him/her the story except that it's your friends house and your watching it while he was on vacation. From there tell him the truth about what became of the door. That two of your friends were over and that you had a lot to drink. One of your friends thought it was the bathroom ( he's drunk ) and kicked the door down. Then urinated on the rug. You had everything cleaned and replaced except that you need the lock picked open so that you can put it back on the door.

Oh god, the massiveness of the pictures. You could try shimming it, although it probably won't work. Just take responsibility for it. Much easier.

Trying to pick a BEST padlock as your first try, with improvised tools, is pretty close to hopeless. You should suck it up and just call the college locksmith.

Close to hopeless. One of my first locks (like, the third after two padlocks the same day) was the Best lock on my dorm room in college.

Sorry, I didn't know that it was terribly difficult, and that I couldn't - so I did.

So, hurry up and try it before you learn that you can't. I probably couldn't pick that lock today to save my life...
