Hey im new from Canada Ontario and just started picking. I made a couple sets from the video one of you guys made... Great job really good, but ya i have a padlock from RONA and im confused i have read the MIT page but i still dont really understand. I can play with the pins but do i pick them or can i get like a flat pick completly flat and place it over all the picks so they all go in and try and turn it? my method hasnt worked on the padlock but one of the deadblonts it worked and took me like 5 secs.

Sounds like you need to read a bit more and understand the fundamentals of lock picking, including the use of something called a tension wrench. Re-read the guide again and try to visualize what's going on in the lock as you place your tools inside it.

using the search button usually turns up what you're looking for as well, so that you have something to search for and so that you know what to do a bit better, heres the basic idea of picking.

You need 2 tools, a pick and a tension wrench, a tension wrench is simply a flat piece of metal with a 90degree bend near the end of it, to give a sort of L shape.
The pick is often a fairly long, thin arm with some sort of "head" on it, two very common ones are "hooks" and "half diamonds". a hook, as the name says is a a hook, like the buttom of a j almost, a smooth 90degree curve. the diamond is just a sort of triangle on top of the arm (see picture).

You put the tension wrench in the lock at the opposite side to the pins, then put the pick in above it, either hook, or diamond of whatever head you have, facing the pics, you can then use "Single Pin Picking" or "raking" to open the lock.

Single pin picking is when you basically when you press up each pin in turn, starting with the one hardest to press up and workin from there, you stop pushing the pin up when you hear or feel a click.

Raking is when you move a pick up and down and in and out in the hope of setting the pins at the "sheer line" and the lock opening when they are all set. Altough less accurate, this method can be easier and quicker than single pin picking, although not always!

If you are still confused, search the forums for posts on pretty much any of the words in " " in this post, so things like "single pin picking" and "raking", to name a couple...

Sorry this post turned into a bit of an essay, i kinda got carried away  so if it offends anybodies knowledge, i apologise, but if it helps someone it was worth writing!
