Proper tools would help, likely so would less tension (almost allways the case with beginners.) Practice Practice Practice. One piece of advice, when picking the lock from your frot door, eiither remove it from the door, or pick while your door is open. This will attract less attention.

Or you just pick it from the inside of your house  .

Doesn't the door have to be open for you to do that?

A Schlage isn't the easiest lock, especially with hairpins. If it's too hard you might want to try an easier one. Remember to experiment with tension. Pushing the pins up shouldn't be difficult but you still need enough tension for the pins to set on the sheer line. Good luck!

I have to add this. If you are new to picking NEVER pick your door locks, or any other locks you have to rely on. :) Go pick up a cheap deadbolt, or some padlocks, or anything.

If the pins arn't staying up, try picking the other way. May let you get it quicker. Then of course you'd need a plug spinner....
