I've been practicing on a couple of pad locks and a deadbolt I put into a 2x4 and I've got them down pretty well, but now i'm trying our back door lock (which is a lock in nob) and I just can't seem to get it. I can get the back 2 pins and it feels like the third but whenever I get the front 2 the middle pin (3 pin) always unsets. When I try to set it again it feels like it's getting stopped by the hull. I would take this lock apart but my mom say no way, fearing I'm going to break it or somthing. Does anyone have a possible solution for that ANNOYING  problem? SlimPickens aka Ubu
We can do this the nice way or the mafia way, doesn't matter which way really, because you'll still wind up with broken shins.

I don't have a rake yet... I'm going to be ordering the 14 piece set off of Southord pretty soon. I have made a half diamond pick and have been using that and a saftey pin. (works pretty well  ) SlimPickens aka Ubu

I am new at this also and have picked just about every lock(pad) here at work( nightwatchman) and when I tried my door at home I had a lot of trouble. I did finally open it but I had to switch around with the pins. Example, instead of back to front I did front to back, ok didn't work, start with 3rd pin to front then went to 4th and 5th. Try switching around and see if that helps. Oh, I have never raked so I can't tell about that.Cheers

Hey thanks for the advice. I tried in a bunch of random orders (middle pin first seemed to work best). I got the lock once but can't get it again  . I can't rake either but I'm going to get a new set of picks (I made mine out of brick strapping but they dont work too well) and hopefully learn to rake. I had the same problem of pins unsetting and others feeling like they were getting stuck on something while picking the doors to my house (5 pin tumblers). I managed to get the door open several times by picking the pins in different order, and just re-picking the pins that popped up.
Try to follow this:
If you pick a pin and another pin pops up, re-pick the pin that popped up and go onto a different pin.
Keep doing this and you will eventually, by trial and error, find the order in which the lock needs to be picked.
