The bend.

I'v been trying to come up with the best bend on my home-made short hooked picks, and after trying some my self iv seen that there is all kinds of em on the net. So, my question is: What is the ultimate bend?

1.The Falle-type bend of 90 degrees (http://www.lockpicktools.com/images/FSP-L3-600.jpg )

2.The usual 45 ( http://www.lockpicktools.com/images/LP-8-15.jpg first one from the left) ?

Maybe its all about personal preference, but i think there's got to be one bend to rule em all. Or is it just me?

Yeah i think it is about personal preference..

I have made and experimented with heaps of curves and lenghts of hooks and i found out of them i liked the short hook pick i wasnt really into the deep curve hooks picks and so on so i would say it is personal preference yet there will probably will be someone who thinks there is a "Bend of them all"

if the bend is 45 degrees ( I prefer radian measure actually ) then you will likely push up some closer pins when setting a pin high. If this isn't false setting them at the same time, then thats fine and the lock should pick, right? But if it is then you need a pick that will not push on these pins such as 90 degrees or play with tension so they come back down. There are drawbacks of using 90 degree curves as well with tight keyways and moving laterally in the lock smoothly. It seems that having several options is the best solution.

I think the obvious answer is to have a double ended pick wit a 90 on one end and a 45 on the other.

This of course leads to the need for different sizes.

So now there are 2 picks, a small and a large double ender.

But wait, a size right in the middle would also be nice.

Starting to sound a lot like the Falle set yet......?


The point i'm trying to illustrate is that there is no perfect hook pick. If there is, I'm pretty sure every one here would have it. On the other hand, a basic hook is the most versitile pick IMO and a small selection of various hooks is the only way to gain all of their benifits. I think I recently hit an important stage in my life recently when I realized there were more hooks in my pick collection than in my fishing gear box.

I agree with Pyro if there was a perfect hook someone would have posted about it along time ago and it is good to have different hooks like pyro said so you can try them all out and see which one works for you. All of my hooks work for me except my tall hook pick but i tend to like homemade hooks because you can Modify them to suit what you want.

I personally like the southord 'slight hook' euro pick's bend, but their plain ole short hook's tip. The perfect all around hook to me would have a medium-slimish profile with a slight bend, but a more slip resisting tip. Even though the bend is almost non-existent, the narrower profile allows you to angle the shaft in a way that in most cases it wont bother any neighboring pins. But of course, this is not always the case, and you should definitely have a hook with a more accute bend on hand.

Though I don't think there is a 'bend to rule them all', surely theres a 'bend to rule a large subset of them all (for a given person)'.
