Question about digital lock upgrades

Postby toomush2drink » 22 Feb 2005 8:07

Just got back from a job to open and replace a digital lock.It was a borg but basically a cheap one with the rubber surround. The problem is a did a straight replacement like for like but its in a high use area. I pointed this out to the client and that they would keep getting this problem as these locks are just not up to it, being opened over 50 times a day.
I would like to get the job to upgrade the lot but using the existing holes where the originals are fitted. What products can people recommend for high use areas which can fit to these exisiting holes and at what sort of prices. There at least 10 of these i saw so im looking to provide a quote for upgrades with my invoice and see if i can get the extra work.

Thanks in advance guys

Aren't your Borg, Asec, Lockey, Era, etc all pretty much the same and not ideal for high usage doors...?

I'm not sure how the lesser series of Unican holds up to high usage traffic, and not sure of their compatibility with the 'cheaper' locks anyway, but I'm sure most agree that the Unican 1000 series are the ideal locks for high use doors, but they really are relatively expensive.

My limited experience of people with a lot of these cheaper digital locks fitted in high use area's is that they'd rather just replace them when they fail than face the expense of having the whole lot, or even just the ones used most frequently, replaced in one go for superior locks. What does it cost to replace a failed one, £100 fitted? So they just carry on paying this every few months...

I'm sure they believe we're talking rubbish as to their suitability just to gain the extra work anyway...

Whilst they are prepared to pay every few months to get another cheap one i want to give them the option of having them all changed at a competitive price. Today was a major inconvenience for them and it happened last week too but i wasnt called out then. This is a busy doctors surgery that cannot afford to have these things going wrong all the time so i think given the option im sure they would at least consider it.
Like you say most are pretty much all the same apart from the name or brand but someone must know of a better type which works off a similar system or a brand that is at least reliable for high use areas but using the same fitting holes like the cheap ones.
I know the kaba stuff is top notch but it needs to use the same holes that are there already.
At the end of the day im fishing for work but thats how to get these jobs and its only the cost of an extra piece of paper when i send in the invoice.

Toomush ,alot of these ddls have a heavier duty alternatives .Lockey do the 1150 which you should be able to find at www.totalproductsales.co.uk.I think Borg and codelocks do one too.

acl is right borg do do a couple but their reliability let them down, I've fitted two borg 5000 to a golf club on adjacent doors, one of them started playing up in the first couple of weeks and failed after three months the other is still working as good as the day it was fitted, both doors have the same usage.

If you fit unican 7000/1000 the holes from the borg would be covered up by the new lock or you could fit finger plates underneath them just to tidy up the area, especially if the doors are marked/scratched.

the unican 7000 range will cover all the holes where the borg was installed . but will require some further installation holes. istalation time approx.30-60mins retail cost of locks 115-12o pounds sterling
