Isn't there a breakdown of how the Simplex's work -- and how to decode a combination out of them -- by a prominent hacker and "lockographer" floating around online? (Don't want to say too much in case this sort of thing is considered privileged.)

on a trip to ukraine, the entrance to the hotel had one of these on it, but it was much simpler... 1-6 and no letters at all. it was pretty old, and if you held all the buttons down about half way, you could force the door open.

that really let me rest easy in my bed
