£40 aint the cheapest either - had a call recently for £39. Didn't need to do the maths in my head to turn it down. I've had a few at £98/£99, and one over the £100 mark at xmas.
Know what your saying about justifying the price 'v' time on job. Very difficult, and embarrassing at times.

and the sad thing is a real locksmith loses a job and the customer is ripped off, their should be a law against this type of tradeing, i hope soon their will be.
i would go up against any of the nationals and pit my skills against theirs, i look at the likes of chris b , al etc and ask what right these companies have to call themself locksmiths , its a total rip off yet YP condone this if they pay, YP help the con by allowing multiple adds by these companies, i wonder however if every honest Locksmith, chippie , gas engineer, plumber etc went to YP and said if they adverise we dont, would YP accept their ads if no other tradesman advertised all over, i think not, but alas no one sticks together as yet.
roll on licenceing and skills testing

118-24/ 7 Ive been on their list for about 7 months and had 2 jobs.
The one was at 23.30 when they had come back home and hadn't picked the key's up (yale cylinder) They called 118-24/7 and they gave the number of a lockie in telford.(about 45 mins away) but they asked if their was someone closer they gave my number, when i asked for the address it was 2 street's away. So it just goes to say they don't look for the local people they give the number of the next one on the list ( is this what we are paying for)
Toomush. brilliant idea with the sign wrighting if i seen your van advertising £45 opening id store your number. I recently done some reasearch and the public around my way expect to pay at least £70-£100 for a lockie to attend Thats not including any matrials. so £ 45 Is an honist price and i wish all the luck with it.
Ps
maybe it could get rid of some of these so called call center lockies.
 Picking with quality tools ???

if you consider these firms put 4 ads under locksmiths,4 under joiners,4 under plumbers,4 under heating engineers etc in every area of every directory
the chances of the directories not taking their money is slim
also if you are talking about something like CORGI for locksmiths i know that these firms will take on one plumber with CORGI and put his badge on there ad but send any plumber to do the job (i know this for a fact, seen it happen, reported it to CORGI, nothing happened)
whats to stop em doing it with locksmiths
why dont MLA do something (ho.ho.ho)

I agree it should be if all bona-fid lockies had to be registerd and have id card to be produced upon request and if you were stopped without it and carrying locksmiths tools you should be nicked for going equip't.
But what would stop them carrying the drill !!!

[quote=" Wait till my van gets it new sign writing with "locks opened from £45" all over it. The way i see it is anyone who has paid more and sees my van wont be happy and will remember my company name.[/quote]
I cannot put sign writing on my van, when it was it got broken into and half my gear got nicked, additional locks on doors did not stop a crow bar
police did not help they just started laughing when i told them my occupation
i bet he(thief) didn't know what half the stuff was for.
any way not signed = not robbed probably lose some jobs but s*** happens

these firms do not use picks = no problem
i have an i.d badge ,no one has ever asked for one(use to show it to the customers at the door but no one was interested )
i have told customers off (elderly and women always)for just opening there door and inviting me in with out even asking my name let alone if i was a locksmith or not
and as for the police arresting you for carrying picks with out id i think they have enought on there hands with the new hunting laws

Are you having a laugh ? Round here they break into any van if its not secured up regardless of whats on the side of it, even if it has a "no tools left in van overnight " sticker. At least if they see what it is i do think their going to have an idea its secure.Thieves are smarter than you think and i know a few "ex" thieves who have grown out of it. They used to go around looking at how low they sit etc on the suspension or maybe they were just walking past while the van owner had the doors open and looked in. If they want in they will get in but by being prepared you can lower the odds of it happening.

So, for £39, you would end up pocketing £14.39. This, for your time, resourses, expertise, fuel...

Yep - laughable aint it. Worse when you think with travelling, you may be out for 2-3 hours, which equates to an hourly rate of £4.80-£7.20. From this deduct your expenses, and you're left with a pittance.

I know what you mean but I had one van completely sign posted, I lost count of the number of times it got hit. (try telling the insurance how much your picks are worth. come to that try working without them). The bloke who had the dynolock franchise by us had the same problem. But no signage no problems (our thieves must be more selective )
Come to think of it the pooper scooper van has never been broke into and that's sign written, wonder why?
