The same technique as used on regular pin-tumbler mechanisms, just a tad bit easier, since you can hold them in your palm and manipulate them as you please.
If you're not sure how to pick a regular pin-tumbler mechanism, read the MIT guide to lockpicking (A google search will bring up the guide immediately), or you could talk to Hitman666 =)
Good luck!

Personally I find padlocks a little bit harder if you hold them in your hand, since if you are holding the padlock you have fewer fingers available to properly manipulate the tension tool. I think it is easier to work with a lock that is mounted on a board or fixed in a vice.

I like pad locks, becaue you can turn them so the pins are on the top, bottom, or either side. If your picking a lock with an M1 key blank the half ball works quite nicely.

I have tried three padlocks so far.
My experience is, that once you get to know the last pin and the right amount of tension, the lock is easy.
Set the last pin, and the other pins will automatically set by the length of the pick.
Maybe I have been lucky..........

Mayboe you've been working with some really cheap padlocks. A decent padlock will not succumb to that. None the less, there are a lot of very cheap padlocks out there.
