Confusing 15

Postby xylon2 » 27 Feb 2005 20:40

My Master 15 is giving me a lot of trouble. Occasionally I can open it but most of the time I will sit for half an hour just fiddling with it not getting anywhere.
I can't tell if the pins are setting or not, some seem to be set naturally, some seem to have resistance on them. The whole lock is just really confusing to me. I searched around but couldn't find any specifics on this lock. My friend has the same lock and also has similar trouble with it. Does anybody here know what this locks deal is?

From Master's website, 5 pin laminated steel lock. This should be just a touch harder than one of the 4 pin laminated lock cylinders. Generally of the 4 pin laminated locks use the same cylinder, and likewise for the 5 pin locks. You may have trouble if the bitting is especially difficult. In my experience, the laminated Maser locks do not have any security pins. (Note, the #21, or one of the other rekeyable locks could certainly have security pins.). You probably just need more practice, and I would guess, less tension.

So it's just a matter of practice you think? Well, I was hoping there was something about the 15 that specifically made it pick differently. My guess is the driver pins set at majorly contrasting elevations. Thanks. I'll keep working at it.

is it old?

put a drop of oil in it and only use the smaller size picks, and lighten up on the tension, picking is not about forcing.

Tension was not the problem. I finally have figured out how to open it. I use the technique "snapping" and it opens in 1 try. Thanks for the help guys.
