Barricade by yale story and question

Postby Guesss » 3 Mar 2005 2:26

I went out and bought a dead bolt finally (splurged a little) and it was a barricade by yale. It was one of the cheepest on the shelf but the word yale stuck out because kwikset just doesn't do it for me any more. I can pick those with my eyes closed. so i looked through all the keys and picked what i thought to be the hardest looking configuration. i am not sure if pins can go to 6 or 5 but here is roughly the key set 53251 where 5 is the deepest it can be cut.

I was having a little difficulty picking it because i hadn't ever dealt with new springs like that before and that took a little getting use too. A little pressure form the tension wrench just wasn't enough.

Once I figured out that hurdle i just couldn't get it to turn it seemed like i had all the pins set time and time again but something just wasn't working right like i had one pin set wrong. or miss set. i got frustrated and tore the lock appart. to my suprise i found a spool pin althought it wasn't exactly an "I" like i expected just the tip was I'ed and not the whole pin. Little did i expect this from one of the cheepest locks on the shelf.

so i removed the spool it was in the 3 or 2 spot i am not sure which cause i didn't see when i dumped them out. After i removed it i was able to pick the lock even with the tough pin configuration. which it is tough to have a 51 at the end when your fave pick is the half diamond and you hate the short or long hook. none the less i can pick it with the diamond.

so here are my questions...

1 yale doesn't say anything about pick resistance or even being a tough lock so how could i have knowen about the spool?

2 How do you know a soppl is in a lock with out previously knowing it is in there?

3 do all yale locks have a spool? and is it always in the same location? 2 or 3

4 what is the easiest way to defeat one or many spools with out magic? ha ha... that one is kindof a joke

any questions about my experience or story or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

also what is the best way to take appeart a lock so i don't break any more... mostly the covering over the springs.
also where is a good place to get springs cause those things are bouncy as something that is really bouncy (ha ha) and i keep loosing them.

thanks all for your time

Hi Guesss!

It sounds like what you found was a mushroom pin. It's another type of security pin. As to why it's there, even cheap locks con have security pins, so you always have to be on the lookout. You can generally get teh sense that a lock has sec. pins by the feel. They all feel a little different. The differences are subtle though. Don't forget, those are put there specifically to frustrate doing what you are doing. :) When you feel a a slight "give" upward before the pin stack stalls on you, it is a good indication that you have hit a spool. If you think about it, when a pin sets properly, the stack will stall in one spot, and the give you feel will be the plug turning ever so slightly. With a spool, the same feeling happens, but is accompanied by a slight upward give by the pin stack. If you're going to get past sec. pins a very light tension will be your best friend. You will have to let back on the tension just a bit to be able to slide past the bottom notch on a spool. Of course, even a fraction too much release and other pins will drop. It always works best when the spool pin is the first pin to set, but it never ends up that way. :) Then matters get worse when there's multiple spool pins.

IMO, you could not have found a better lock to make your next challenge. Now you can work on it with or without security pins.

Hope this helps. Happy picking!

Thanx DB you always have great advice, and detailed like it should be.

I knew that about the shroom pin after you said that i remembered reading it i just couldn't seem to when i was thinking about it and once again thank you for that. You are right about the perfect lock to buy. I am going to pick it for a while without the security pin cause this key configuration is a little tough.

I did a little searching on here and found another post about barricades... there is almost no information on the site about them be he seemed to find the same thing. So i was wondering if there is a security pin in all barricades or maybe all yale locks... Please if anyone else has information on this let me know..

i was also looking back at my post and well i was drinkin a little when posting it so sorry bout some of the spellings and grammer.

if anyone knows what a "soppl" is please let me know.

Do a search for yale as ive posted a few times on these locks. When taking it apart do it inside a freezer bag or similar to catch all the bits. :D
