fist pick in 3 min or under

so here is how the story goes.

i got some picks from someone i met through here (you know who you are and thank you much) They were homemades from streetcleaner bristles. I got them in the mail and i couldn't wait to get them open. So i went up and started pickin on two locks that i got for free from a smithey (if you wnat details about that let me know) and i got the first lock in under 3 min and i was so excited that i forgot to pay attention to what just happened like it says in the MIT guide... soo i repicked it and payed attention to what happened.

see all i learn from my mistakes.. and the lock was a kwikset just in case anyone was wondering

anyway moving on, then i tried to to pick the second one it wasn't as easy but that is because it is old and the pins are really sticky and i am just not that good yet :lol:

i am still working on the second one but i am still happy about the first and i will work on the second..

you all already know but that is such a good feeling the first time that tension rench turns.. so excited and i am hooked i think i have a hobby for life

Well congrats!

The cool thing is that you get that thrill (or at least I do) every time you defeat an even hard lock. You may well in fact have a hobby for life.

BTW, they are made from hacksaw blades, not street sweeper bristles, and I'm glad they are working for you.

Well, congratulations.

Keep at it, and you will be picking a lot more locks in the future.

Is it just me, or are there a lot more people making picks these days?

Making tools is half the fun, for sure! I've said it before... this is a hobby that offers so much, and getting to handcraft cool tools is a great part of it. Mind you, I never would have known that when I first started. I'm glad I didn't, or I probably never would have ordered a set.

sorry db i hate to tell you it wasn't the picks you made for me, i haven't gotten those yet :cry:

but i can't wait to get those too... the ones that i recieved are 3 double sided ones from street sweepers and one tension wrench. there are so many nice people on this site. now i need to find some that have some spare locks around that i can start pickin. being broke sucks but there are alwasy people out there that are willing to contribute to the needy.. just like the picks you sent me and the ones i recieved today. Thanx again db for you contribution when i recieve them

and to everyone else out there that is giving to people who want to learn like myself.

I keep telling people this. If you want free locks, go to a gym, pool, etc, and as the manager/maintenance person what they do when they have padlocks abandoned on lockers. I'm telling you they cut the shackle and throw out the lock. Just ask nicely. This world is full of nice people. Especially when it costs them nothing.

It doesn't matter if the shackle is cut for the purposes of practice locks.

I know I've said this at least three times on here. Somebody some day will post saying they took my advice and it worked... then I'll be validated.

As for your picks, I thought it seemed a little quick. I'm glad you're taken care of, and able to finally start picking!

I can't understand how you can make 20 posts before picking a lock. I had been picking for a month, and had picked about 4, or 5 locks before I posted here.

Rico... take the time to search the FAQ section of the site before asking new ones. People around here get tired answering the same questions over and over. There are extensive discussions on where to get picks and how to make your own.

Sorry Rico, but new posters do try our patience sometimes.

Now, since you asked what you did wrong:

You could have read the "READ HERE BEFORE POSTING" stickies in the FAQ forum,

You could have made your first post in the "Introduce yourself here if you are new" thread,

You could have noticed that the site is full of tips and tricks to making your own picks. You just have to spend a little time reading and searching. Why ask other people to do your reading and searching for you?

You could have noticed there is also plenty of information on where you can buy picks. Also if someone has some picks to sell that they don't need any more, you might find them in the Buy - Sell - Trade forum.

Lastly, if you ask people to send you private information on how to make picks, that information is lost to everyone else and is not shared or preserved. It is best for the site if useful information is placed in public posts.

So, sorry you got off to a bad start there, but welcome to the forum and do spend some time looking through all the great information that is already here!

rico - picking is as tough as the lock and the time you put into it... as to your request for picks and making... pyro mad a video about pick making that is really good.. Hats off to him. and as every noob hears read the mit guide that will tell you how to learn to pick or pick better. put time into it and to be come better faster take apeart a lock or two. when you do that start with 2 pins the 3 then 4 and when you can do each consistently (don't forget to move the pins front and back and varried) then 5 and 6 if you have a lock that has one..

Look in the buy and sell. verjeal has a great lock for sale that will help you learn to pick better and the options are nice too. you can put in security pins when ready. He also has some cut aways which well is obvious as to how that can help. I hope that i have helped. i tried not to flame at all :wink:
