CAD/3dsm Animation. I need measurments

Postby DanArgent » 7 Mar 2005 10:06

I am doing a series cad drawings of locks and then taking them to 3dsm and doing animations of the locks being picked along with instructions. I am going to do them to corespond to the MIT guide. My hope is that this will provide some help to the larger Lockpicking comunity. I was wondering if anyone had exact measurments of particular locks. What would be best is JPGs or GIFs of blueprints. I can always make a "theoretical" lock, but I have a feeling that it would be better if my models were of real locks that were actualy out there.

Check out http://www.dlaco.com/spacing/tips.htm

This has a number of measurements which will allow you to at least be acurate with your pin positioning and spacing.

Hope this helps.

I'm unfamiliar with the term "Shoulder to first cut" found on this page. I assume it means the distance from the opening of the lock to the center of the first pin, but I could also see it meaning the distance from back to front or something. Could this be explained? Thanks for the link these numbers are great.

Shoulder to first cut is a measurement from the face of the lock to the first pin (the one you can see) in the lock. Those measurements are actually standard cut depths for key cutting, so it is intended to give you the distance from the shoulder of the key (the part the kits the face of the lock when you put the key in) to the first cut on the key.

Hope this clears it up.

Dan:

The best thing, as always, is to have real-life reference material.

I have a whole set of locks/ picks in .obj / .dxf / .blend format, and the best way was just having a real lock taken apart and using it as a reference while modelling.
