Getting re-started in locksmithing

Postby loby » 26 Feb 2005 14:44

Hello, i'm a noob to this site - hope to learn the customs without ruffling too many feathers.

I'm interested in getting back into locksmithing. I am not a newbe wrt locksmithing, grew up in a family locksmithing business and 've been working on locks since i can remember - though i never was licensed myself.

Catch is i went into another trade and the family business closed down years ago.

New Jersey (home) seems to have stringent licensing requirements that make the barrier to entry quite high if i want to keep my day job.

Any advice in getting started?

Any relatives in your family who can attest to your experience in the trade?

Also, see if there are any currently working locksmiths who remember you when you were working in the family buisiness. You will need both of these if you want to be recognized.

It's been a very long time since I saw the NJ requirements, so they have likely changed.

See if you can find that sort of information, and get hold of the application forms as well.

I'll have to look up the folks that took the business over from our family those years ago.

It won't help that the business was in NYC, and i'd like to practice in nj.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, but if you can managed to get yout NY locksmith license, I believe it is transferable.

Don't quote me on that one though. You will have to look into that.

Still, if those people remember you, they may hire you temporarally so that you can get the NY license.

Romstar -

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that may be the route of least resistance.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

NJ LICENSE

Postby steve16 » 9 Mar 2005 15:41

The state of New Jersey recently pass a law that you must have a license to locksmith in the state. You can be grandfathered if your currently in the field. There was info. posted on the GPLA web site. Greater Philadelphia Locksmith Association..Good Luck!
