Asec padlock

Postby RooJ » 8 Mar 2005 19:39

Hey,
I was wondering if anyone can give me any info on this lock:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y36/RooJ/Asec.jpg

I bought it a while back and have only managed to pick it twice. Im wondering whether it has security pins as its a real pain to open. Opening via raking is near impossible as far as i can tell and many, many times ive thought all pins where picked but the lock just doesn't open :(. The packaging doesnt say anything about being pick resistant and it doesnt contain any identification / serial number for the lock either.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Assec is a budget brand but they can be a very tricky pick, not sure if it has spool pins but still a challenge . I stock the euro's and normal cylinders as they are great value for money and actually not bad quality.
Keep at it though and you will get it

as toomush said, they are a budget brand, so it could be poor machining quality that means it is hard to pick. it looks like a nice secure padlock though, it could have a spool or serrated pin that feels like its set but isnt.

Although being a budget brand, their euro's and oval's aren't an easy pick at all, with spools and a nasty keyway. I'd much rather come across many other brands than an Asec euro or oval...

Their padlocks though are a doddle to pick. I've got some 40-60mm Asec pin padlocks and they fall open.

Hold the padlock so the pins are at the top, place a tension wrench at the top of the keyway in front of the first pin, being careful not to obstruct it, and apply tension clockwise, a bit more tension than a cylinder. Just give it a couple of rakes towards you and it should open...

Thnx for the info. Still no luck with it at the moment although i havn't had much time to try. Im not sure how much difference it makes to picking but I noticed that the pin settings (when looking at the key) seem quite awkward having a very deep cut for pin one, barely any depth for pin two and the cut for pin 4 is also very deep compared to surrounding ones.
I tried the raking method Evored and it does seem very effective but i never seem to get all the pins. Another thing is it seems very easy to overset pins on this lock when compared to the other locks i own.. Anyway im enjoying the challenge.. so im gonna go try again... and again... and again. :D

just to defend the assec brand a little, the padlocks are not badly machined nor cheaply made, they are in fact better quality than many padlocks far more expensive.
the ovals euros and rims are an excellent lock to fit, reliable, no call backs, they have such a narrow keyway that a pick gun is useless, only a thin stainless steel pick fits in there, keyway has wicked twists that snap many a pick, and each cylinder has 3 anti pick pins in it, this is 1 more anti pick than a standard yale.

i think they are far better than many expensive brands yet at budget prices, but all are well made and far from cheaply made. and as for the bs lever locks , all assec lever locks are legge locks in the assec colour and at half the price of legge, yet same lock.

in this case budget means quality

Completely agree Pinky, when I said budget, I meant cheap, in price terms only! Their quality appears every bit as good as many relatively far more expensive brands and, certainly with that horrible keyway, I'd prefer to have to pick those more expensive brands!

Their padlocks too are well made, just a very quick pick! I've got so much Asec stuff on the van, I don't know what to do with it! It's excellent VFM for us Lockies!

Just an update, i must of opened the padlock about 6 times in the last 2 hours (trying on and off) :D. I finally found a way to reliably pick it by gentle raking to start with (thanks evo) which seems to set about 3 of the pins on average, and then using a hook to pick the last pins, being careful not to overset them at any stage.
I love the feeling when you finally figure out how to beat a particular lock thats given you problems :), this one has really put up a fight.

To anyone who owns an asec lock, i was just wondering is this a typical asec keyway?

I guess after some more practice on this and my other locks ill be on the look out for my next challenge :D.

just to let you guy's know asec now has some sort of tie in with cisa as i come across a couple of new padlocks with both brand names on.

Also the new asec masterkey system (not sure if it's out yet) is a exact copy of evva but made in china but will be half the price, but will use the asec reversed key section, according to jim at eddie's (aldridge)

As you guy's have said it is good value for money. i just hate dealing with eddie's and get much better discount else were. also the product knowlage is poor.
