Ok, I'm a begginer, so I got the kwikset deadbolt and did the recomended program of starting with one pin then adding them, then rearranging the pin config etc etc. After about a week, I can now pick the kwikset in any pin config reliably in under 30 sec. What would be a good lock to buy next? I don't want to spend that much money on it though. What would be a step up from kwikset, but still good for a newbie? Thanks.

I thought that Weisers tended to be low-security, on a similar level to Kwiksets?

I'd say get some decent brass (not pot metal) cylinders off ebay or
at a flea market. Hardware stores arent a great source for good
quality locks. Cheaper to get them off ebay too, especially since you
don't need keys for practice locks.
Get a follower tool and a pinning kit, too.

I got a 'defiant' it was cheaper than a kwikset, and probobly easier, but at $10 I figured I din't have much to loose. At least with two cylindars I can play around with more combos for a while. I think I will get a schlage once my pick set arives.

You can do way better than $10 per lock by buying used locks
off ebay. Locks w/o keys are esp. cheap, and you can get higher
quality than you'd get from the cheapo quickset hardware store
locks.

You should be able to get some different locks at yard sales, CHEEP especially if they have no key.
This is the season all over the country for yard sales .. take a short drive, bring the wife, girlfriend, kids (all or any of the above) stop at a few sales ask the sellers if they have any "junk" locks you can buy.
Another good place to find locks without keys is your local "good will" type thrift store.. ask the manager, they probablyhave a box of them somewhere just waiting for you.

wow, thanks for the advice on getting cheap locks. My next buy was going to be a Schlage from home depot for about $30. I will look on Ebay. My girlfriend also likes going to yardsales, but it will be a couple weeks before we can get an open saturday.

i think yale would be a good idea.. i bought one and it hada security pin in it i have typed about it a couple times on here if you just seace me and yale it will tell you more about it but then you could take out the security pin and pick it and put it back in and learn about those too. and they are pretty cheap as well so double bonus.
What if I pick "Pandora's Box"?
