Making lock picks

Postby §GliTcH§ » 30 Aug 2003 18:47

Hey guys, I am new at the genre of lockpicking. I have started lock picking for the fact of a challenge and something new to do. I work with my dad as in keying locks and having our own door lock buisness, so I decided to jump into learning more about the door locks and so. Well I have question on which is how to make my own lock picks I need some techniques that u pros. or average lock pickers use to make ur own, I could go out and buy my own and stuff just its funnier and u learn more making ur own and plus while making ur own, u can make how u want.
Thanx

making picks

Postby quicklocks » 12 Sep 2003 5:14

Ifound the best thing to make homemade picks from are hacksaw blades (not juinior ones normal ones) they are pretty thin but strong. use a grinder to shape them it will take all day with a file.i just copyied the shapes of the pictures on the net. blades also make good tension bars if you can get the springy type (if the blades break to easy when you bend them they are no good i use draper ones
good luck :)

I'm still a newb but I made my first set from bicycle spokes. They're strong but flexible. If you want to find plans to make picks with look at the MIT Guide To Lockpicking. Its a beautiful document. Hope you enjoy making your set.

I posted this earlier but anyways.... I found that old metal leaf rakes, the actual part that collects leaves are good to make picks out of. But the only way i could cut them is with my dremmel and a cuttoff wheel. Then i just use a bench grinder to shape my pick. By these you'll have a lot of material to work with and its fairly strong. meets my standards. OH yeah, you might want to grind them just a tad bit thinner because they wouldn't fit in my padlock unless i did.

how did you make these tubular picks, and can you put some photos up?
i have been trying to find a method to create your own without a machining set (lathe, mill, etc...)

I have a pick i made ...

Postby pixlox » 15 Dec 2003 4:40

The ideal way would be to use a tubeular key cutter... I used a file and filed all the 7 knotches where the key was cut all the way back... Then i took a Blank Lock apart and glued the Cilinder part of the key without the vertical part of the handle attached to the cilinder where the tumblers and springs were.. Having Drilled the holes the rest of the way through ....i used the casing to stick the key and cillinder in and finanally Goodie Bobby pins as my pins bending each one to what i thought was proper tention... I'll Try to have a friend take a picture for me as i have no camera... I'm not as good explaning it as i am using it...lol

Picks...

Postby David_Parker » 16 Dec 2003 4:02

My first set (as I've ranted about before) was out of steak knives. Followed Steve Hamptons guide for doing it, and they kick ass. Strong, durable, but the handles are large.

I don't really like hacksaw blades. They're too thin in my opinion (handle wise). So I like to use exactoknife saw blades that you can pick up from Hobby Lobby or such for about $2.99 (american) and draw out the templates from there. After that, I just pop them in the handle and ompfh I'm off picking.

I just posted a bit about making a very very nice HPC Dental style style (ha) pickset for about 10 dollars on yahooo locksports. To find the street sweeper bristle that I talk about, just walk down the street.
