Collar stopping plug from comming out. how to remove?

I am familiar with the retainer pin and nut that is outlined in gremiller's guide. I just got a lock though that has a metal collar that prevents the plug from being removed from the hull. It is shaped like a C with a line going horizontal. Like the Euro symbol. I can't figure out how to remove this without distroying the lock. Anyone have any suggestions?

sounds like a circlip, get a set of circlip pliers or a couple of small screwdrivers and a set of needle nose pliers to ease it off. if this isnt what you're talking about, some pictures may help.

sometimes i find the sit search turns up more than google, for ways to remove a circlip lp101 will probably have more, but google wil win on number of pictures

yes, a google image search confirmed the fact that it is indeed a circlip. What is the advisable meathod for removal short of ordering circlip pliers (Don't really want to do this at all). I managed to force one off with a screwdriver after you suggested it, but I almost stabbed through my finger

i took mine off with a razor sharp knife since i couldnt find a screw driver to fit, screw drivers seem the safest way there is to me short of ordering the pliers. you can ease them off gently untill u can get a good grip on them with pliers, or untill you have a gap between the lock itself and the circlip that you can put the screw driver in and pull is off that way.



the red line is the screw driver, the round thing the lock and the black rind the circlip, just to try and clarify what i was talking about (im nto sure if it helps or makes things worse but there you go!)

yes, that helped alot thanks. After some experimentation, I am also able to get them off by putting some needle nose pliers in between the two 'ends' and opening the pliers, this separates them enough that I can then slip a small screwdriver or other levering device in and pry it off.

This works for the lock that I have, but I have also seen other locks were there is further machinery past the circlip that makes it hard to get the screwdriver and such into. It could probobly be done with pliers though. Thanks for the advice.

since I was totaly unsuccesful in all of my searching to come up with meathodes for doing this other than ordering circlip pliers, I am going to write up a brief guide to circlip removal once I figure it out really well and post it as a thread in pick-fu. That way, future people can search for it.

I have circlip on 2 of my deadlocks and I just use my fingers and nails....

Wow, either you have some strong nails, or really weak circlips. When removing my first circlips, I only had a screwdriver... By the time I'd gotten it off, my fingers were mutilated.

Thanks. I like learning about this stuff. After a bunch of practice, I can quickly and easily remove circlips with the plier technique I described above. I'm working on doing a diagram of it, I'll post it here when I'm don.

cool, sounds like you're better at taking them fof than i am! took me a good 45mins to get mine off! havent got round it putting it back yet, i need to get hold of a paperclip the right size to put the pins back in my lock!
