Master Padlock ProSeries 6121LJD (disassembly)

Just thought it could be useful to someone.

The lock is a 6 pin, 54mm wide laminated steel with hardened boron alloy shackle. It has an outer cover for weather proofing and a removable cylinder. LJ stands for the long shackle version.

Here you can see the cylinder retainer and the retainer nut.

To disassemble, open the lock(use a key or pick it), pull the shackle as it has no spring, and you'll find the retainer screw. Use an hex wrench to take it out.

The cylinder without the retainer.

Picture of the shell without the cylinder, you can see the laminated core.

The cylinder has an E-clip, which has to be removed for disassembly. Insert the key, remove the clip, and carefully pull it out(careful not to loose any pins/springs).

The fully disassembled Padlock:

Notice the 5 spool drivers on the first position. 6th is a serrated driver.

Those types of cylinders can be a real pain to pick, due to the ungenerous
room for a tension wrench and a pick. I think there are 4 different styles of plugs for theese locks. I'll see if I can get some pics of them.

BTW, your lock was probably rekeyed by a locksmith since theese come standard with five spools.

Thanks.

It hasn't been rekeyed(it was bought new). The 6121LJD comes default with the 6 pins(the 5 spooled, plus the serrated). Weird thing is it isn't listed on Master website with this configuration.

And yes.. Very hard to pick pin by pin. So much for those who say all Master Padlocks are easy to pick  I actually find the keyway easy for my picks compared to some Euro cylinders I have. Easy access not meaning easy to pick though.

When I have time, and if there's interest, I'll try to post pictures of some Euro cylinders I have around with tighter keyways and incovenient wards.

Cheers :D

Yes, I agree. And seeing it makes me want to go buy one. I've passed by them before not wanting to shell out that much for another master locks that gives me 2 minutes of fun, but that might be more fun then I thought it would be.

that is a nice lock and some nice pic's, looks like a good lock to learn to pick, you can take out all but one serrated and one spool pin to lean on then up the amounts as you get better, all in all a good practise lock looking at it, i wouldn't mind one of those!
