new pic materals with garage sale season comming up

so i had an idea just hit me. since it is garage sale season and there should be some good ideas for things to make picks and wrenches out of so i was thinking about things that might work.

one idea that came to be was steak knives. they would work better for picks the wrenches but could work for both. Think about it. It is handled and the right leingth and could pretty easily be made into most picks. and a rake well it is already one as long as you slim down the back to fit in the hole. an the tip is set nice on the one sthts i am thinking (into a point) to it would lift the pins nicely and slide right in.

anyne else think this would be a good ideal or no or had experience with this already?

what are thoughts?

really cheap steak knifes have a stainless metal that is the best thickness for picks, the better ones are too thick.

the cheap ones are the ones that i think you will find on the sales so that would be perfect and that is what i was thinking too. Plust that steal is durable so i am thinking it is an all around good idea.

I have some cheap ones that were 2 for a dollar at the dollar store around here. I considered sacrificing them for the picking good, but found some other stuff to use before I decided to ruin them. Its good too because they have a couple more cuts left

Another great source of material to look for is sewing supplies. Those folks have made so many various tools over the years that are top quality metal. Go to a large sewing craft store and you would be amazed at what all can be transformed. I have made picks, shims, feelers and more with top results. Iv'e used oversive straight pins, needles,thin mini rulers,metal guides and lots more. I even designed a mini pick set that is a sterling silver needle holder (handle) and matching double thimble holder (pick holder) that goes around my neck.

You could also look for Materials for making pick cases You Can make excellent cases out of old close including jeans made from denim and coderoy; I have never tried using steak knifes for making picks. The ones we have down here look as if they will break the grinding disk.

And what about butter knifes they seem as if they would work well they are: Flexible, Thin (well the ones i have seen) and seem like they would work well
