Just one thought i have and that is too make plenty of references to thissite and state that it is a free cd. It wont stop it being sold on ebay but it may help a little.

i may look into some way of enclosing the information within the cd to stop it being copied or taken apart and put in lots of references to it being free etc. if i can ake it into an actual program, it would probably be even better.

I am a programmer so i could help make the program. Also, it would be good to hard code the text saying its free. Maybe try and get a licence that stops people from selling it.

hmm, if nobody had any objections i could copyright the cd and its contents to me, or to lp101, and hard code things into it as you said. including pieces of encrypted code saying something to the effect only official cds allowed, that would do anythign to the running of the program but that we could check for and prove someone boke the copyright, not that we ever would so... oh well, ignore me its late...

i came up with the idea that the cd connects to the internet and check for authorisation from lp101 to use it, im just not sure how it would work.

I think it is important that all the stuff on the CD stay in the public domain. You can't copywrite any of it if you don't own it. The CD will include only material that is freely distributable, right? Well... it's vital that you leave it that way.

ok, fair point, in that case, we'll just have to put all over it that it is free to distribute, must not be sold, can be got at lp101 etc...

If we just put all over it that it is free and make it uneditable(thats imposible, because if u just hex edit it, u can rid of it, but most people dont' know that) then when someone tries to sell, they wil probably put some pictures and it will so free. There are ways around this, but it will help. About authenticating by connecting to a server, that would be virtuallly impossible. How would that work?

All of this stuff is currentyly available. If somebody wants to compile it and sell it on ebay, they will. I say just compile the stuff and leave it as is. Include a basic copyright notice in a text file on the cd and be done with it.

I'm also contributing to that thread and trying to crack the Dudley lock. If I discover anything I'll definitely post it there, and then you can add it to the CD.

This is a good link for cracking Master combination locks:

I must admit copy protection has been on my mind since the cd was suggested,

Have you asked mr picks if you can use his site and info?

If you was to use Adobe and lock all the files for printing etc it would be a start, yes you cab rewrite the headers and swipe the protection off but the gimps on ebay wont know that, will they?

Having to confirm a program with a website is very common and infact more common than not so it is obviously possable, you could link it to your site even.

I think a DO NOT SELL FREE MATERIAL FROM LP101 slogon accross all pics would be a good idea along with it being down as a watermark on all the text.

Are you going to give them out to anyone or are you going to put a limitation on them, for example you must have 50 posts on 101, at least before you can buy one, then we can be sure it is going to the proper hands and not some kid at a car boot sale. Infact i think this is the best solution all round as any copy protection is allways open to abuse.

sabin, thanks for the info, i'll go through it, get permissions and add it when i have some time, i've only just got up and i've got to find some medicine, im really ill :(

peaky, by mr picks site, which do you mean, on his profile his website is lp101, surely all information contained within the forum is open info. :?

i had previously thought about doing it all in adobe because of the ability to lock documents. we can include watermarks in pictures as well as documents and put it in writing across them all where it cannot easily be removed. i've never made an adobe document since i dont have the programs to do it, but could we sort of make a header and footer saying do not sell free info etc then turn the pages into images so that they cannot be edited out or something? i have no idea how adobe works, so i dont know what it can do.
as for the limit of 50 posts, thats a good idea, i hadnt thought about restrictions like that, but you have a very good point, i suppose it'll basically be the opposite of the newbie of the month quiz conditions, you must have over 50 posts or be registered before 1st Jan 2005.
how would you do the thing where the program confirms with a website, even if we dont use it, it would be interesting to know for future reference if it is possible to set this up and make it so that the information on the link cannot be copied, so unofficial cds wouldn't connect and therefore couldnt be opened.

im open to ideas on any of this thing though, so if anyone thinks something doesnt sound right or is missing something, just say
