If there was someone with a home computer network with the appropriate network operating software like windows 2000 server, then they could set up a file server to host the files. Windows 2000 active directory allows the administrator to create groups and add users to the groups. The users would be given a username and password with this information also stored on the server for the authentication process. This way only authenticated users in that group would have access and rights to the files. The network would probaby need lots of bandwidth. You need to talk to a network admin, i think i saw a post from one somewhere on this site(Foley-Belsaws posts i think).

yeah, i see how that could work, it is one way of securing the information, but it sounds like all the info would be on the server which is kind of deviating away from the point of the cd, it started because of the size of files, the bandwidth they were taking up and msot importantly, because people on a slow connection like dial-up cannot access some files because it would simply take too long to download them.

I'm think that perhaps this would eliminate the need for a cd as usernames and passwords could be sent via email. The users could then download the needed files and then make their own cd if they've got a re-writer or simply just let the files reside on their hard drive. As a lot of the files are only going to be text only files(MIT guide etc) then file size is never going to be that big, therefore quick download time. As for lockpicking videos etc, then those files will be big and only recommended for download by broadband users. I do agree with the 50 post threshold, this is a good idea.

The information on this site, though viewable by the public, is not actually "open".

The content posted here remains the property of the poster as well as LP101 so if you wish to use content directly from this site, you need to ask and gain permission from both Mr. Picks as well as the original poster. You would be wise to do so and to have a text file on your CD listing the contributors of information.

i will be asking Mr Picks, but read back a bit and you'll see one of the original things the Cd was to include was a list of authors and people who helped with it.

To help some of these situations out with huge file sizes I have already created dial up versions of my template pictures. I would aslo be willing to make dial up version of the videos on my site by breaking them up into several chunks in say 2.5-4mb chunks if that would help everyone out. I too agree that the cd is a good idea but would hate to see it make its way into the realm of ebay and the likes  .

if this is the case we may as well just break the videos into smaller chunks, put up a text file giving a few of the good lnks found so far and leave it at that and give up with the cd idea.

there will always be the problem of ebay so we may as well leave it and let people find the information for themselves, its all on this forum anyway.

I dont want to ruin the idea at all, as i think it is a good idea. I was just saying for future use it may be a good idea for me to go ahead and break them up into smaller pieces or you will be mailing cd's for years to come  .

its just with all the people saying about hosting it on servers and doing away with the cds, we could do.

i dont mind posting cds for ages, once a CD is in one area that person can pass it on and stuff like that, so it wouldn't be too bad, i dont know, see what people want to do and we'll do it.

I still think the client/server configuration would work best as it would centralize everything with files etc being located at a central point as opposed to links popping up everywhere in numurous posts. In effect you would setting up your own webspace on your own home server with your bandwidth totally dedicated to lockpicking/locksmithing. This would have the added advantage of not being shut down so easy, like this forum could one day if the 'powers that be' decided to.
Ironically, until recently i had all the hardware and software neccessary needed for such a configuration and could have satisfied the requirements, until a dispute with my landlord led him to changing the locks on my doors when i was out and seizing my property within. Hey if we cant get it up and going lets blame him.

Client server is fine with me. My ftp is still running as is my http. Whatever is added to my ftp gets added to http as soon as i screen it to be sure it is not copyrighted material. I already have it setup with an lp101 login so it is ready to go once I get the videos setup for dial up users. One thing is that I am only on a 3mbit down and 256 up connection so the bandwidth gets eaten up quickly. Speeds usually are in the 50 KB ps range at their best. I have looked into hosting options but right now the amount of bandwidth being used it just looks to not be an option.

Bandwidth could be a problem. A few users downloading at any one time can pull it down significantly, and going by the interest in this subject, there would be many users at any one time. An option might be to queue the downloads, limit the users download speed or at first limit the amount of users. Although compared to my setup Zeke, your 3mb is about 6 times my 512kb. Don't know what M.I.T has, but if hes on uk broadband then i'd say about the same speed as me. I know in America its possible to get a 5mb connection. Thanx for the link, i'll have a wee look.
