The first pick I made was a half-diamond, it didn't work very well on anything. The second one was a smaller half diamond, ground down to be quite rounded (almost a semi-circle). Much more luck.

My personal favourite pick now, though, is just a small flat piece of metal curved slightly up (not exactly a hook, more of a half-hook), and rounded on all edges. Works on nearly everything.

I am becoming partial to the Southord C rake, I rake then flip it over to pick usually with expected results. seems to work well with desk drawer locks and lower quality pad locks.

I also learned from my outdoor locks that if a lock gets clogged with alot of pollen/oil somehow, you can usually open it with another key that fits. At least, it works for me.
