Hey, I can't quite seem to pick an ILCO Genuine Pin Tumbler lock, i have tried raking, pin by pin, and almost everyother thing. Can someone help.

P.S. I am using Southord Picking tools

I was going to suggest something, but then I saw your sig and realized I'm not qualified. ;)

Seriously though, just take it slow and, in all liklihood, lighten up the tension. I don't know what your skill level is, or what is going wrong for you, so that is as helpfull as I can be. More details = more help.

Ok, i can pick up to 5 pin tumbler locks, and wafer, and tubular locks.
Every 5 pin i picked has been ok, but when i get to the last pin, all the pins reset.
I dont know why this happens

welll looking at your sig im probably not good enough to answer either, but here goes... i've got two words for you: spool pins? if it was a spool in 5th, picking it would unset all the other pins, if im right of course! no doubt db will corrent me!

Hard to say what's going on for sure. Could definately be a spool in the last position. I am not sure I understand your explaination though. Are you saying that on every 5 pin lock you pick you get stuck at the 5th pin? Or is this a problem you are having with just one lock?

That sigs better,

I think he means that on every 5 pin lock he does he gets to the last pin and all the others reset!

I dont realy know whats happening here either, maybe you are inadvertantly releasing the tension when you get to the last pin each time, as you say it is happening on all 5 pin locks you are doing, are you holding the locks in your hand or are they mounted on somthing, if you are holding them in your hand try using a vice and using both hands to pick the lock, you may find that you were inadvertantly realeasing tension at the wrong time.

If you are meaning that the 5th pin in the row each time, perhaps you may be a little mixed up and dont realise that locks dont pick in order ie pins 1,2,3,4,5 they may bind at say 2,1,5,4,3, if you are trying to pick pin one then go to pin 2 and so on then that is wrong it may be that pin 5 is actually the pin to pick first and then pin 1 second etc.

As a quick note mit, a spool in the 5th position wouldnt reset all the pins it would lock the plug up until the tension was released, picking a spool pin is no differant to a normal pin, you just have to be more careful, spool pins arnt done in any order (although some people say pick them first this isnt true) an incorrectly picked spool pin would just turn the plug a little more then stop, there would be even more pressure on the normal pins so they would stay where they are rather than reset, this is why i dont thing its a spool, i could be wrong though.

I've actually run into spools and musroom pins that do reset other pins when they are set.

Something about the size of the bottom of the spool or mushroom. It moves the plug just enough that other pins fall as a result.

You could be bollocksing your first four pins as you reach back to the last one. SouthOrds are pretty stout, and they flare toward the back of the tang.

If he were lifting the 5th pin too far up, wouldn't that drop the correctly set pins?

Hey, its rare but it does seem to happen. The most common one seems to be this really nasty spool pin where they actually machine a thou or so off the top of the spool.

Makes that part more narrow, and then the bottom is normal size. It's almost like a "popping" when you push the bottom of the spool above the plug. The jarring is just enough to shake another stack or two loose. It's a pain in the rear but what are ya gonna do?
