When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Hello all,

I am not new as such, but just come out of lurking.

I am an Engineer in a hospital.

This is my first post. I have some pics to show you all ,but don't know how to insert them in a message.

I made me a prcatice lock from a cisa rim cylinder. I can't expose the last pin for fear of damaging the lock.

I also went to my local market today and bought a DOM cylinder brand new to practice on as well. £1. (got a pic)

All those people who say exposed practice locks are not good as you need to feel the lock are not much help at all to newbies.

I have been picing now for about a year and couldn't understand why I couldn't get this lock open with my picks. After filing it with needle files now I know.( dremel to risky)

Pins 2,3,4 are spool pins and the pin nearest the actuating bar has a double nick in it.

if I didn't expose the lock an want to use it for practice I never would have found out that what I thought was a cheap rim lock took me 3 hours to open with picks ( and that was whilst I could see the pins moving) so boo to all who discourage exposed practice locks.

It is a shame I can't get the pics on....never mind eh?

I got 3 keys with this new rim lock an am planning to make a practice bump key with one of the new keys.

Q. when someone says a number 9 cut, what is the measurement of a number 9 cut and where is it measured from?.

I also want to make practice tibbe pick, falle pick and a dimple pick as well as a lever pick.

I have some free raw materials to anyone who wants them.( Uk members only< postage cost thing).

I have 9 pieces of tube and a rod to go inside it to make your own lever pick.

My brother works at an oil refinery and got some 6mm OD stainless steel tube.

Bear in mind that these are no where near finished and need filing or milling etc.

I need some measurements from other forum users please to make my own picks.

you know like you get a blister pack of paracetamol tablets on foil.

If someone could remove the tablet, mould me the head of the falle pick in the tablet place with some blutac or plasticine that would be great.

I also need the diameter of both shafts if possible.

It would also be nice if someone could do the same with the tibbe pick that would be ideal.

I am sure you can imagine the thing with the tablet strip but I had photos to show you.

I have seen some dimple lock picks on here as well, but no measeurements.

Can someone tell me the measurement of the "pitch" of the key. Ie the distance between each ridge on the key ( or is it not that important).

Thanks to all I have learned from.

P.s can i get the tubular pick to work? can I F***![/img]

well i cant help you much with the picks im afraid, but i can help with the images. go to http://www.photobucket.com and make yourself an account (its free) upload the picture you want to include in a post, go down the page so you can see it and copy the code below it that says something like Image then paste that line of code into your post and hey presto, your picture will be in the post! :)

how good was that DOM cylinder you got for £1, i might have to go to my local market and pick one up if i can! that pin with a "double nick" in it sounds like a serrated pin, do a search for them.

congrats on coming out of hiding by the way! ;)

m.i.t the scope is the dogs for looking inside locks to see if anything is wrong or to find the broken key in it.

The magnifying glass is that strong you can even see scratches on the pins that connect with the key.

It has a light which is also magnified

bit of a gimmick as well though

m.i.t just measured my picks with a digital vernier and found that the thickness of my half diamond is 0.4mm thick and the thickness at the top of the keyway on the DOM lock is 0.2mm.

1. this is going to be a challenge to pick.

2. there is a small slide that holds the springs inside in so I can just slide it open to reveal the pins and springs.

3. going to need some ultra-fine picks to open this one.

i'll let you know how i get on

you may need some slim line picks specially for euro picks if you dont have any. how does the key fit in the top of the lock if it is that thin? surely the key would just snap. :?
that sliding bit that allows you to access the pins and springs sounds really good, it should be useful for chaing the pins while you're learning to pick.
i look forward to seeing how you get on with it!

i'd like some of the stuff to make my own lever pick, but i dont have the tools you'd need, like you said, they're nowhere near made and need milling and stuff. shame i dont have the stuff to make them :(
