Hello Everyone,
I've tried searching on this subject, but it's probably something so amateurish that no one here bothered to post anything about it...
I'm baffled by a mortise lock that came off a door to an office janitor's closet. I am able to pick the lock and turn the plug, but the mechanism to retract the bolt doesn't activate.
Usually, with the locks I've picked of this nature, once you have the plug turning, it will start retracting the bolt and you can feel a spring of some sort applying counter pressure; as if it's trying to go back to it's neutral position.
With this particular lock, the plug turns and spins easily until it hits a point where it will turn no further.
I don't have the tools to cut the cylinder open, and I don't want to risk damaging it, so could anyone help a newbie out and explain what may be happening?
